$22 isn't that bad considering that it's 72 entrees. The box probably weights around 26 pounds.

I'm trying to remember back to when I last opened a really old MRE. I can recall seeing the four digit datecodes on entree boxes going back to 1997 but I just don't recall any from earlier.
At the very least, the case the entrees come in should have a date.
