the way is do it: turn the knife and fix it with your hand on the ground - pull the magnesium block in 90 degrees of the edge. it makes good flakes.

I have one of them and I love it. The only hard thing is to get the pile of magnesium.

These firestarting tools are pretty good! I buy a bunch all at once and spread them around my various kits.
