shipping FRH?

Post by shadowcamper1383 » Tue Sep 23, 2008 1:34 am

I heard it's illegal to ship flameless ration heater that come from MREs, is that true? I have around 40 of them and I was wondering if it's possible to sell them and ship them. Thanks

I believe that they have to be shipped via ground only no air shipping.

wstrnsky got it right. FRHs are like matches in that they can't be shipped via air - just via ground. I also recommend that you put the FRH's into ziplock bags just in case the package gets wet in transit.

FRHs are classified as "Dangerous When Wet" by the US postal service, and are considered as ORM-D materials. As such they can only be shipped domestic mail by surface transportation. You need to clearly mark the package as "ORM-D Domestic Surface Transportation Only"

I get requests to ship these oversees and across the border into Canada. After speaking to the USPS about shipping to Canada they said "we don't have ground transport to Canada." Therefore, shipping an FRH is illegal and not worth the attempt for a few measly dollars.

Homeland Security is very strict and will not tolerate any business. In as much as people forget we are at war noting the events of Nine-Eleven and the Anthrax scare makes the phrase "too damn bad" sound pretty reasonable.

I hear that's why some manufacturers of civilian MREs use the salt-water activated heaters. They are shippable.

Do you know if you can ship the salt-water type heaters to Canada?

jfko6, you hit the nail on the head. I've never understood why people sell basically worthless crap on Ebay, for a few measely dollars, and take a chance on the Armed Postal Inspector Dept. busting down there door, for shipping FRH's, Cigarettes, etc. PS, I used to buy cartons of cigarettes at the commisary, and mail them to my Grandmother, back in '80's. Never got caught.

If you're gonna nuke it, remove the contents to a plate first. The pouch has an aluminium layer in it, does wierd things in a microwave...
Just leave the pouch laying in the sun, works well.
