I can see where the 3 year life is likely due to the commercial items that can't stand the test of time. It almost brought a tear to my eye having to toss out a Choclairs chocolate bar with just a nibble out of it.

I've never had the cabbage rolls but I would love to try them (one of my favorite foods). If you have any there and you open them how about taking a pic and posting it, just so I can see if they actually look like the real thing.

I did get just 1 of the cabbage rolls. I'd be happy to posts pics of it for ya when I get around to opening it.

If I was closer, I'd trade it to ya for a KOD donair and a bottle of screech

The Army says 3 years then ignore that. While posted with 4CMBG in West Germany in 1980 we were issued US MCIs dated 1971 & 1972 and I survived. Recently I have eaten 1999 dated IMPs and 2000 dated UK 24 hr GP packs and no ill effects. As stated previously storage is the key at 68 degrees F 10 year old rations seem fine. Somewhere a long time back I read MREs stored at this temp are rated at 8-10 years. [It may have been the Natick Site] the dry components (ie powdered drinks) might taste a little stale but will last much longer. Salt lasts forever.

Safety Note: Entres, try tasting a drop on your tongue if it has a metalic taste, garbage it.

3 years is the "expiery date" but rations are said to be good for at least 5-7 years after that date.

Mind you if there stored in a cool location then there should not be much of an issue, there might be some flavor loss from what I hear.
