'Prison Calls it Food, Inmates Disagree' - Associated Press article
'When shooting suspect Christopher Williams acted up in prison, he was given nutraloaf — a mixture of cubed whole wheat bread, nondairy cheese, raw carrots, spinach, seedless raisins, beans, vegetable oil, tomato paste, powdered milk and dehydrated potato flakes. Prison officials call it a complete meal. Inmates say it's so awful they'd rather go hungry.'
On the one hand, I can see that this is all about observing 'due process'. On the other, maybe Mr Williams should be grateful his guards were restrained enough to give him 'nutraloaf' rather than a damned good kicking, since he'd assaulted their colleagues.
I've eaten worse, and can think of times when I'd have been grateful for a chunk of that stuff - and I haven't committed any crimes. Come to think of it, I can think of places where you pay for similar stuff.

Whoops, sorry,DangerousDave wrote:Hey Baldy, I saw that article in no less than 2 newspapers.

I'm a fan of this guy (although I disagree with some of his actions), and I suspect you might be as well: Sheriff Joe Arpaio
I could go on and on about Joe, and I think I have in the past here, you can search it..
I like the idea of the loaf. We already cater too much to inmates. That being said, we throw too many people in jail for too small a crime, so that would be fucked up. They should feed the inmates that crap at supermax prisons, not jails. They should use food as a reward that can be taken away. You earn by not fucking up. First a bologna slice to go with it. Next maybe a mustard packet, etc. Give them a ton of reward potential, so much so that it would take two years of good behavior to end up with what is a normal lunch now. They'd have to eat separately though, or people would get beat up just for their food. I guess that wouldn't be too unlike now though.

And the reason that they don't is to lessen the potential for violence that may endanger the safety of the prison staff. It's easy for us on the outside to say feed them crap and stuff, but we all often forget about the people who risk their lives daily going into the locked facilities to do a job that most of use would prefer not to do.

Very true, but I read before that a more balanced meal makes prisoners happier or easier to deal with or have less mental issues or something like that.
F-It, let them kill each other. I say bring back the gladiatorial arena and let the lifers fight it out if they want. Winners get good accommodations with TVs of their own and a little better food, losers get buried. PPV of course, and it helps fund the prison system so we have to pay less in taxes and BS. I'd pay $50 a PPV to watch it.
