MRE and Hurricane Relief
MRE and Hurricane Relief
I saw the FoxNews footage of looters in New Orleans cleaning out a grocery store. I impulsively felt a solider with an A2 fired in the air would empty the grocery store of these hooligans.
But I thought, "Where would I go for food?"
I thought that MRE's, distributed two per person per day, with a media blitz on how to use them, would provide relief. The only kink is the user being willing to eat "army food" (a day of starvation makes people less picky) or knowing how to open the MRE bag. MRE entrees taste rather strange to civilian palates; I'll give you that.
Opening the bags to reveal the entrees for distribution would take valuable time. It is a thought. T-Rations would require a messing facility but might have greater user acceptance.
Any ideas would be welcome. Is FEMA feeding anyone using military-style rations? What kind of shelf-stable food do they use?
Thanks

I heard on the news tonight that they were feeding people in and around the superdome MREs. Being that there is an estimated 10,000 people in there that is going to be one hell of a load of MREs...
Not to mention the ton or ton of tons of MREs that have already been dropped elsewhere. We are talking in the 100's of thousands of MREs being dropped there. I bet ebay will eventually become flooded with good prices on them after people start getting their computers hooked back up, months down the road probably. kman, any info anywhere on the MRE statistics currently going on there in MS and elsewhere?
God Bless those getting the CCC!

I heard a figure on the news a few days ago about how many MREs they had ready for the Superdome. I think it was 36,000. So immediately, I tried doing the math in my head - 12 per case means 3,000 cases. But then again, they were talking about 20,000 people in there - so 36,000 MREs aren't going to last a heck of a long time.
As for the whole MRE relief thing, I'd bet that MREs are going to be a staple of relief food down there for quite a while. The relief centers/camps will probably be setup to provide regular cafeteria-style food but for the people who didn't get flooded out but whose homes are still standing will probably be able to get MREs.
IIRC, last year in Florida after all the hurricanes went through, they had areas setup where you could drive through and they'd give two bags of ice and two cases of MREs per car. I don't think they were worried about doling them out based on 2 or 3 per person. The only hitch was that you had to wait in line for however long it took.
And yes, there is probably going to be a flood of MREs on ebay in a few months. Right now, I just hope they're able to get the food to the people who need it most. I'm always happy to find new sources of MREs for cheap, but I can't say I'm happy about the idea of people just grabbing them with the intention of selling them. I mean, sure, grab what you need and after things settle down if you have some leftover you can do what you want with them.

MRE Update
On the White House news conference today which I saw on CNN; Bush said the DOT is mobilizing 400 trucks and 5,400,000 MREs are being sent to the area along with other supplies. This translates into 450,000 cases.
They are also sending blankets, cots, medical supplies, etc, etc.

I saw some similar footage of the looting. I couldn't help but think that a few days from now those guys are going to be wishing they had looted food and water instead of the crap they're picking up.
But then again, what kind of people are we talking about here? If they need food and water, they'll just take it from someone. With any luck, that "someone" will have a gun and know how to use it.
