Canadian IMP

Post by BigMark » Thu Aug 25, 2005 12:18 am

Well, I just ate a Canadian IMP the other day, and figured I'd rate it. It was the hamsteak with mustard sauce. The ham was like.. well.. ham, but in a good way.. and the mustard sauce was at best OK, but wasn't bad for dipping the chemical bread into.. I don't know if its because my IMPs are from 2002, or what, but 1/2 of the IMP bread I get tastes very chemically.. the other half is quite good though.. the side was pineapples or something, but I was just eating it for lunch and can't stand the pineapple sides. Just thought I'd throw this out there.. Dove season is fixing to start, and I have several cases of IMPs and MREs I plan on "phasing out" so I can get some new ones, so hopefully I'll have some more reviews soon. Perhaps I'll even bust out my Digital Cam and take some pics next time.. I almost did for the ham, but the cameras was still packed somewhere..

kman, aren't you going to do a weeks worth of eating IMPs for the site, you know to compare and contrast to the weeks worth of MREs that you ate?

No, I hadn't really planned on doing a week of IMPs. But this guy:

ate them for 30 days!

Hey, has anyone tried the Canadian MLC (or as I call them LRRP) rations? So far I am the only one to disect one, eat it and have no violent reactions. How about anyone else? If not then I shall divulge all pertinent knowledge about one to this forum.

Hi Treesuit. Are you talking about the Canadian Light Meal, Combat (LMC):

http://www.mreinfo.com/imps.html
(look at the bottom of the page)

I haven't actually tried one so any info you could give us would be great!

Kman,
Yes, the LMC (sorry). I had an excellent opportunity, about two years ago, to purchase 12 of these meals at a local surplus store near my hometown. Now the guy running the store thought these were US LRRP rations but he didn't know how much he wanted to charge so we agreed on a price of about $2.50 a bag.
Now the ones I purchased were the ones pictured on the MREinfo website on the Canadian IMP section down at the bottom of the page. These were about 4 years old, then, and all were the No. 3 Cedar Cheese meal. Well when I got home I dove into one thinking all the time about what it may contain. What I found surprised me. The contents were exactly like the ones picutred. So with that I took one on a camping trip and I mixed dthe contents up with soem other US, Brit, and Canadian meal parts and I found out that the cheese portion was like eating wet sawdust even after reconsituting in water.
The candy was broken up so I sucked on the bits n pieces. The candy bar had gone and dried up, and the pop tart was smashed to pieces as well but made a nice snack while walking. All in all it wasn't bad, unfortunately if someone does get one you may want to inspect the contents first to see if there destoyed. Then check the expiration date because even at 4 years they were about at the end of the shelf life. Combining them with other meals proved to be a good idea. Everything balanced out okay, although I wish I could have found some more different meals to try besides No. 3 Chedar Cheese.
Lastly, I bought 12 ate 1, and tried to sell the rest on ebay. That was a real disappointment :( . Nobody even so much as looked at the auction site. It was when I came down to an unbelieveable-take-it-in-the-shorts price did some people buy them. Well, hope this has been a useful learning experience. If I come across another, or a differnt brand I will be sure to post them here.

I think I remember someone selling LMCs for some crazy price - like $14.99. Was that you? I probably would have paid a few dollars for one just to try it out.

Kman,
Could have been I tried to sell some back in Fall 2003. Though I don't think my price was that high! I had a deal where you could say buy three of the LMC's for like $12.00 or starting price was $9.99. Even with that pricing people still didn't want to but them until I came down to $5.99 for three. I managed to ge trid of all them that way.
Next time I am in Canada for a trip I'll have to shop around at some surplus stores and see if I can pick some ones up for review. :D Some of like the MRE "Food Network"
