Best pound cake: MRE or MCI?

Post by rationtin440 » Fri Dec 12, 2014 7:20 pm

Just curious what those of us who have served long enough to have eaten MCIs and MREs consider to be the best poundcake, the MCI poundcake or the MRE poundcake? As for me, the MCI poundcake was alot better than the nutrolls and fruitcake from the MCIs (not quite as good as the toffee disks and vanilla fudge disks, but hey). But I will say that the MCI poundcake was not nearly as good as what the MRE poundcakes are.

Good topic for old timers

MCI had a better flavor, and was fluffy. I know it sounds crazy, the canned cake was very spongy (in a good way).
The MRE cake has a good flavor but seems more dense. Mind you I have not eaten a MCI Pound cake since 1981, but it was popular as was the Orange Nut cake of the same vintage

I always had a hard time choking down the nutcakes from the MCIs (thank God we only had them for about 6 months before my unit got MREs----it was like Christmas; we came to drill one weekend and turned in our ODs for camo BDUs, our steel pots for Kevlar, and we had these weird looking brown pouches called MREs instead of the cardboard boxes). To me the MCI nutcakes always tasted like the nuts were rancid, I would trade for the poundcake whenever I could if I had a nutcake in my MCI. Believe it or not a bunch of guys in my unit really loved the nutcakes.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Believe it or not my unit was eating MCIs near the end of 1987, but since we were national guard we always got the "leftovers." There really is no comparison between the dessert cakes and other dessert varieties available now vs back then, both in taste and quality.
