Fat Handle Knife Date?

Post by Name_not_found » Mon Aug 12, 2013 2:24 pm

Saw a buddy of mine over the weekend and he had a few things for me.

One was a fat handle US mess kit knife, US on one side, what looks like a crown emblem on the other.

Any ideas to the date of manufacture?

Ill add a pic later on

Is it a stainless steel knife? If so does it have a hole at the end of the handle? If it does have a hole, but no date, it's probably between WW1 and 2. If it does not have a hole or a date it may be WW1. Most of the ones I've seen made after 1942 have a year stamped on the side opposite from U.S.

Blade is stainless it appears, handle aluminum.

It does have a hole and US stamp, but no date, only a small emblem on the back.

Ill get a pic up later tonight, its in the camera already

Unless someone recognizes the exact manufacturer, it could be hard to date. The pattern didn't change between 1926 and 1980 for the most part. Someone here appears to have the same symbol on an undated knife and someone in that thread says that they have one with the same symbol that IS dated - 1944. Unless it was a long term contract it's pretty likely yours was made for the war effort between 42 and 46 or so.
