Any suggestions on a 3 day patrol/assault pack?

Just out of curiousity I'm looking around on the market to find a suitable 3 day assault/patrol pack that will not break my bank account and hold up to a lot of hikes, day trips, snowshoeing, etc. I have several different packs of varying carrying capacity; one of them being the CAMELBAK Generation II MOTHERLODE pack but I recently did some product research on the mystery ranch 3 day patrol pack and the CAMELBAK tri-zip pack. The trizip pack is a idea that was put into production with help from both MR and CAMELBAK, it looks very egonomic and spacious but is still over the $250.00 range. Mystery ranch is even more, around the $300.00 price!

So with that does anybody have any info on either pack or suggestions to something else that might be compatible? Oh yes, any pictures would be nice as well. Thanks

I have one of the Mystery Ranch rucks, guys called it a 3 day pack but unfortunately mine does not have a name on the tag. It is nice very lightweight too, MR stuff is very expensive as your research has shown. It looks like the Kodiak on their website but a little shorter. They are adjustable for height and the yoke is adjustable for waist size, the "frame" consists of two small circular upright metal bars running the length of the pack.

I have used the bigger not smaller MOLLE II GI issue day pack just fine for 3 day adventures. If I had to spend $$ on one I would just go with that. For 3 days hiking carrying all supplies (sleeping bag, MRE's, tent, clothing, etc..) will be a stretch though.

Have you looked into the good old ALICE pack? You can now customize them to your needs too. Might fit your bill better?

CAVGUY,

Yes, as a matter of fact I do have a large ALICE pack that I "tricked out" two years ago at TACTICAL TAILOR. I have the rucksack mods, thicker kidney/waist belt and shoulder straps. It does just fine but the weight issue was a real bear this winter. I took a overnight trip up on Mt Rainer carrying just a minimal amount of gear and showshoes and I think my pack along was closer to 60lbs but with the extra padding in the hips the walk in and out was comfortable. So I'll keep that for longer trips and winter camping. No need to change a good thing.

I will say that the larger ruckack is a bit of overkill in the summer even if you just going to the Cascades or down on the Columbia river for a short 2-3 day adventure, which I did over the Labor day holiday. I used on that trip a Jansport three day climbing pack and packed the minimal amount of clothing and gear but the shoulder straps were too thin and rubbed into my skin and the kidney belt buckle kept popping open at weird times. So this week I'm getting rid of it: hence why I'm posting this question here.

I do like MR but I would have to save up for that. I don't seem to have a clue as to what your refering to on a MOLLE GEN II daypack, the only ones I have seen are those GEN I daypacks that can't hold very much and don't cut it as far as 3 day assault packs.

Treesuit, I use with very much pleasure a Snugpak RocketPak, modular, from our british friends. Is a 70 liters backpack:

Also, some BlackHawk Industries or Arc'teryx LEAF backpacks comes to my mind.

i got an soc bug-out bag in acu a few months ago , a very good bag ,well made some good ideas ,but a bit heavy it tries to do several jobs ,it does them all ,but not as good as a dedicaited bag ,i ll use it as a travel bag and go back to the british bergan style, like the snugpak rocket pack i ll use the main part for standard gear (sleeping bag ,bivi ,wet gear and rations) and change out the sides to suit ie cold gear or metal detector or shooting kit.the snug pak can use ex military pouches and these are very cheap here and with a good sewing machine can be modifyed to any task.
karrimor also make very good bags, http://www.karrimorsf.com ,if i could get one (very rare) i would use a karrimor bowman rucksack(bowman is the current uk military radio system),its modular and can be tailored to suit any need,i ve tried to get one since they first came out but no luck(google bowman rucksack to see) davy

Treesuit,

Here is an example of the MOLLE pack. This is usually called an assault pack. Here is an example on Ebay;

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MULTICAM-MOLLE- ... 1156227009

But might be a bit too small for your needs I used them successfully for 3+ days but working out of vehicles, so I had more storage inside the vehicle. The new ones are bigger than the old woodland first model MOLLE assault pack.

Ak70G2, I've seen the Arc'teryx packs on line before and they are very very nice but ungodly spendy, more so than MR. I'm waiting to get enough money to go and buy the LEAF jacket and pants. I've heard the Norwegian forces in the A-stan get issued those and they stand up to a lot of abuse and punishment. Very erognomicaly designed.

Davy, is that like the Bergan standard moutain pack the the UK forces use, not sure what your refering to.

CAVGUY, oh okay. Yeah, I've seen those types of MOLLE packs before. I had the 2nd generation MOLLE pack in woodland when I went to Iraq. With the right MOLLE accessories you could extend the space out a little more to get three days worth of stuff in there but with myself and the job I had I could never get three days worth of critical gear in there, luckily we still had the large ALICE rucks that helped a little. I guess everybody going to the A-stan is getting the multicam gear instead of the gay and worthless ACU stuff. I've also seen a much larger MOLLE pack that looks like it's taller and can hold more, anybody know what the deal with that is?

Take a look at that Snugpak backpack. I think you'll find at actiongear.com.
