This is the time of year I ask friends for DVD recommendations.
So, I'm askin'.

For fun, please mention if it contains any "ration content"!

I'll get us started...
Generation Kill
Last summer, based on the recommendations of several of you, I watched this HBO "docudrama" miniseries about the invasion of Iraq.
It was excellent.
I was expecting a "conventional" war drama, and was surprised at how brutally honest it was. After the initial shock & mental readjustment, I felt it was a vastly superior experience than most war dramas. Yes, it was unsettling, but honestly so. War isn't "tidy".
Ration-wise, it had more MRE content than anything I can remember.

Favorite ration moment: "Iceman" opening an MRE, cursing, then bemoaning the fact that it (yet again) did not contain jalapeno cheese.
If you watch it on DVD, I strongly recommend you watch the "round table" with the actual real world people who were portrayed in the series. It was one of the best DVD extras I've ever seen, and gave some deeper understanding of the people, and updated us on where they are "now".
Firefly
If you like science fiction and/or Westerns, try this 14-episode series.
It's one of the strangest and best TV series of all time.
F*x murdered it half way thru its first season, but the DVD sales were so impressive, Universal made a feature film of it only three years after its premature killing.
The basic premise is that it takes place after a civil war (500 years in the future), and focuses on the eclectic crew of an independent interplanetary freighter.
It's not a sanitized Star Trek universe. It's about people at the edges of society, who are just trying to get by. It's both gritty and idealistic (an odd, yet very pleasing combo).
Ration-wise, they have c-rats, freeze dried (some look remarkably like the "AA-14" that I'm always going on about), and sundry other space-ready shelf-stable food.

There are many food/eating related scenes, including some great quotes, like the one in my sig.

I've got a theory that if you like "Ron Paul" (an American pseudo-Libertarian politician), you'll like Firefly.

Both of those series are likely to be available at your local Library, and are definitely available at Netflix, and many other streaming video sites.
Several friends have mentioned Game of Thrones, and I'm on my Library's wait list for it.
Does anyone know if it has rations?
