Anything I should know about Chemical Heating Pads?

Is there anything wrong with using these? I haven't seen any recently manufactured ones so I'm wondering if this stuff gives off a toxic gas or something. Seems odd that we don't have a civilian equivalent, the site says you can reuse them indefinitely, only have to add 2 tbsp of water and it lasts for about 8 hours. What I'm wondering is, assuming they are safe to use, do they produce enough heat to heat up an MRE entree, water? If so I think this would be a great replacement for the disposable MRE heaters.
