Was not sure what topic to post this in but I was remembering the incidences of food-borne ilness among US troops back some years ago, and how far we've come since. I'm wondering how often this kind of thing happens with German, British, and other countries rations, and what has been/is being done to remedy these issues. If I'm not mistaken some countries have surveys to fill out that actually come with the rations. Also this may have been covered at some point in the past and if so my apologies.

The German Army had a food poisioning in their Camp Mazar-i-Sharif Afghanistan just a couple of days (Oct 13th) ago. 206 Soldiers got minor sick.

Thanks for reply housil! Not sure but it sounds like it was garrison food that made them sick. I recall seeing many training films during the cold war that showed how vulnerable the food system was to incidents of poisoning caused by lack of good hygiene as well as deliberate contamination of the system by an enemy. Amazing how easy it is to get sick from improper hygiene and how essential it is for cooks and kitchen helpers to be as clean and sanitary as possible all the time. In the U.S. Army, the job of investigating incidents falls to the Veterinary Medicine units, does the Bundeswehr have similar investigative units?

The article that Housil provided doesn't really say very much about what happened or what kind of illness it was. The report just mentions that the German troops and civilian personnel got mildy sick. I really hope it wasn't some sort of botulism or food posioning from their mess facility.

Ah yes, the nasty botulism! One of the things we could expect if the cold war had turned hot in the 50s and 60s and resulted in missile exchanges---the Soviet Union actually had warheads containing botulism on some of their ICBMs. And to think that Nancy Pelosi and other famous/infamous folks pay money to have this stuff injected to make them look younger!?
