Ramstein Airbase

Post by housil » Tue Aug 09, 2011 4:20 pm

I spent a day at Ramstein Airbase Germany, the biggest military airport all over Europa with 47.000 troops over there.

After an 6 hrs coach ride, we arrived at

Great pics Housil :-)

47000, makes Amberley (Australia's 'super base') just up the road seems like a country town aerodrome. At we get to see alot of flyovers on the beach C-17's, Super Hornets, Helo's. great for a plane nerd like me.

Awesome pics housil! Just curious if you have ever heard of an alleged "super-hardened" NATO airbase in europe that featured underground hangars and an elevator system which lifted planes to the surface for take-off? A buddy of mine recently related a story about such a base in the eastern part of the former West Germany, (he could not get specific) and that the base had been de-commissioned. Actually it turns out he was a civilian engineer and did alot of stuff during the early 1980s that he cannot discuss in detail.

Yowie, if you really are a plane nerd and ever wanna discuss planes with someone who loves them: Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden! About 6 years ago a mutual friend introduced me to him and boy does he love to talk planes! Amazing person, super smart, and just about the most kind-hearted you'll ever meet, and once you get him on the subject of planes, look out! :D We must have spent an hour or more talking planes from the Flight 666 tour plane to the F-104 that crashed in the Quabbin Reservoir in the early 1960s.

I can live with three years sounds like a really interesting guy to talk too.
I miss the days when Australia was not so PC that the F-111's were still allowed to break the sound barrier anywhere near civilization. certainly made for the odd scary horse ride when I was a kid
