hi guys

i want to buy a "familie-pack" of gasmasks for the emergency reason which i hope never come. but you never know... also swine flu - you know - flu season is comming for the first time and no one know how it will go on.

can anyone give me an advice WHAT mask to buy? (i prefer new ones) it must be a long tiome storage proper and the most importend reason: the filter has to be available after years. overstored filters are an extra huge topic i can imagine...

i am ogle with with BUNDESWEHR M65 mask but i dont know if it would be the best. there are different sizes and the filter is not the best for the long time storage as i can see what i get offered from them as "overstored".

Different things require different gasmasks.. for example, military gasmasks stop particles (like smoke, dust, fall out, virusses) and chemical agents like mustard gas, fosgene and chlorine gas..

BUT, they don't help against things like gasses from solvents.. (biggest threat as civilian; trucktanker with chemicals that crashes etc)

In the Netherlands we have a large company that supplies all sorts of things for companies.. from pencils to full protection suits, from fire extenguishers to pallets..

Gasmasks are pretty expensive. I would prefer a civil above a military, because they have a larger "window" (monoscreen instead of 2 glasses) and a lare variety of filters. And note that filters only work about 4 hours (depends on the sort of stuff you are breathing).

I would get an mask with one filter for solvents, and one for chemicals. As something happens (alarm) simply turn on the radio or look it up on the internet, and view what's going on, and use the filter.

They are pretty expensive though, and military ones are much cheaper.
The military filters are simply active carbon filters with some filtering material. It's better then a mouth cover, but a bit overreacted for the swine flue (49 000 people infected in europe > 100 died.. i'm not that worried, unless they mutate)

The carbon filters start "filtering" when in contact with air, so keep them airtight untill you use them. Basically a world war 2 gasmask would still work fine, as long as it's kept airtight. Same goes for the spare filters.. It's simply a garanteed time that the bundeswehr gets. It's comparable with the EPa.. it will last a life time, but they're rejected after 3 years..

If you want to be fully prepared, and have some money to throw away, buy a new civil one, with a filter for solvents, and one regular for gasses and such (carbonfilter). If you just want it as an "what if" buy some ex bundeswehr (newest available) with some normal issue filters..

with an epa the worst you can get is are problems with the stomach - with an already activated and unusable filter its the same as when you dont have one.

i already watched the firefighter masks. big windows and more than 20 different filters. but the price... i have an old cataloge in which 1 mask (without filter of course) costs 350 DM netto - i guess that would be today 200-250 euro brutto..

the best would be i go on with the m65 and search new - expensive - filters. but there is the old problem with the size...

are some of the civialian filters compatible with the NATO masks? I've already swaped an old M51 French filter with a BW M65 type (the UK Avon filters are also similar, wrong?) but the civilian filters I had had a smaler threading and did not fit

Yep, STANAG requires that everyone had the same filters on gasmasks, I believe (european) civil ones are the same size.
I'll try to look it up, just a moment..

All military masks have 1 size connection..
All civil ones are 1 size (except for american made ones! they have another tread)

Can't find anything on the sizes, but i think they will fit.
Prizes for a good monoview mask are €90 to 210 euro (brutto)

A GAS mask (ABC-Schutzmaske) wouldn´t protect you from any kind of viral caused disease!

For this, you will need a "FFP3"-mask.

Those mask (Mundschutz) as seen all over TV new´s from Asia:



are a "cure" for the seller only We give them the peoples that are allready sick (infected) to aviod further spread (caughing, sneezing, exhaling).
To protect yourself in INhale any cause, you have to take this:



they are viral proof and need to have an extra exhale valve.
We are dealing with infected (all kind of (lethal) infections) every day


If you are realy concerned about flu, get vaccinated and do not buy "old", useless Army stuff
Wash (and desinfect) your hands regular.
And a "cold" is not the same as a real influenza! (that cases ~ 7500 death every year in Germany. More fatals than at car accidents!)


As a gas mask, I use several Bundeswehr M65(Z), also a newer one with drinking valve.
As they are still in use, you will get filters.
Old filter get a red painting to mark then as "old" and are used in training furthermore. Current filters are still avialable.
They are made by German Dräger company and are available in 3 sizes. Take size "2". That will fit a "normal" head.
I also got me a NBC-suit. German and US, still in it´s genuie package.

All of the above mentioned will fit into a medium sized Alice pack with room to spare. I carry a tent and sleeping bag with the extra slack in the provided lines but found this is a rare inconsistency. Some bags have extra long straps and others don't, there is no NSN number to distinguish them as I think it was merely a manufacturing fault. If you would like me to start a Q and A survival thread let me know, I'd be more than happy to answer questions and finally put to use my SERE training...

I'm starting to get fascinated at the different gas masks available today. Gas masks are very safe to use and also reliable.
