Am I missing something with collectibles?

Since I was very young, I had always wondered why collectibles and their value meant so much to someone. I figure there are three ways this system works based on the kind of person owning the item. The first is the mint condition collector who keeps the item in its package, and in a mint condition storage freezer guarded with lasers, and only opens the fridge to brag to his/her friends about the item that was never opened and will never be used. The second type of collector is the type who buys things based on its resale value and sells it to some poor chap who ends up selling it again, and so on and so forth. The third which is most likely like most of us, is the one who opens the item and uses it, what ever it might be, making it a useful, yet useless thing in terms of economical value. My question about all of this is about the kind of person who buys collectibles and resells them to another collector, if its for example, an MRE from 2001 do you open it and eat it? or sell it from collector to collector until its 50 years old and cannot be eaten, meanwhile jacking up the price until it gets ridiculous?
-Thanks for reading the rant,

in reason it is "food" - why should we keep it in mint condition? why do we buy a ration and not open it? we would never see whats inside.
and the reason why it gets higher and higher in price based on the age is that many rations get eat or trashed away every year i can imagine... for example: C-ration...

Very many overseas rations are sold at the Japanese auction.
However, they are very expensive.
That is because shipping cost expensive at the time of the import to Japan is required.
Japanese people do not have a means to purchase overseas ration cheaply.
Because Japanese ration and US MRE do not have the necessity for import, they are not so expensive.
Is a situation the same also at US?

Simple I open it an d use it!!!!

Then I keep some items like the accsesories, condiments and othe long lasting food items like crackers, powdered drinks candies etc. just to show.
In some like the french RCIR i kept the breakfast packet, crackers and some food items and some candies. In a Spanish rat I got i left mostly the different "mystery pills" they got and some other food items.
But the one I keep mostly intact is my russian pilot ration because is rare and expensive to get$$$$... plus some of the food items tatse like "crap".....
With the MRE's???? I eat them and save some and keep my stock fresh and always evolving....
Peace!!

i have a little display shelf in my sons room that has a purple heart an old german belt buckle, the death letter signed by eisenhower, the purple heart certificate, and the rest of my great uncles possesions that were on his person when killed. i also have some various ration items displayed. pretty cool i will have to post a picture soon. i had this stuff in storage and when we moved into our current house we had more room so i got stuff out, including this. my son was looking at it with me. i told him it was my uncle that was killed in WWII he started crying saying his uncle died. i had to take all the items off his shelf in his room and put this stuff up there. now everyone that comes in our house he takes them and shows them his uncles shrine. i told him that germans killed him and he said he dont like germans. but i had to explain that our ancestors are german so he understands now. it is a really cool little display.

Wow, that is a very touching story. I gotta say, when my grandfather fought in WWII he was lucky to be on a Minesweeper ship and not on the front lines, which is why he is still with us today.

bishopmarine...Is an interesting and touching story.I used to do the same with my granpa's stuff.
Is good to teach our childern and the younger generations to respect and honor their elders and their contributions.
I still remember my granfather war stories. He fought in WWII in Europe. I have plenty of his memorabilia some back in my parents house and some with me.
About collecting the majority I'm colleting now is from the old Soviet Union, from patches to medals ,coins and rare to get military items.
I like to collect the "odds and ends", the rare wird collectables ...the one of a kind

things....
Peace!
