The friendship festival will be held in U.S. Air Force Yokota Air Base in Tokyo today and tomorrow.
I looked at the soldier of the Special Forces of US Army there.
Why isn't their beret green?

At the time when The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs implemented berets for all soldier back in the 90's there was a question about standardization. Because elite units wanted their own colors that set them apart from the rest of the Army different colors were implemented for specialized units.

How do Special Forces Airborne differ from Special Forces?
Are they not Special Forces but only Airborne?

All Special Forces units require Airborne training as a mandatory skillset. All Special Forces units are Airborne qualified.

I think I can kind of answer some questions here. The guys you see in the photo are personnel that are assinged to a Special Forces unit. From the beret badge it's defintiely 1st Special Forces Group out of Ft. Lewis, WA. These guys maybe are a detachment of some sort, the patches and tab are that of a SF unit but they also lack the official SPECIAL FORCES tab that goes above the AIRBORNE tab. You can tell the difference with personnel that are just assigned and real SF guys.

Also the guys are all of lower enlisted rank; here at Ft. Lewis with the real SF guys is that a lot of them are senior enlisted, though you might see a junior guy with the SF tab, AIRBORNE tab and patch, etc. It is interesting in that the guy on the far right hand of the photo has RIGGER wings and basic jump wings. The rest of the guys do not. It is mandatory that SF personnel in training be jump qualified before going to their qualification course. But sometimes that isn't the case. That guy might be in training or waiting to go to a qualification course since the wait time between schools can be long. Who knows?

As for the marron beret I'm not sure on that but I do know that when a guy finally makes it through the qualification course and is finally picked by a SF team he will recieve his forest green beret as completion of his training.

Those guys are assigned to 82nd. AB Division. Does'nt matter about the rest, unless Bill Clinton changed the colors of the official berets again. Of course, we got to get our Regiment Right.

Hey man, think you need to check out the beret flash and left shoulder patch again. All those dudes have the SF patch and tab on their left shoulders sleeves indicating the present unit that they are assinged too,
