Couple of months ago, they predicted this:
Global food crisis looms as climate change and fuel shortages bite
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2 ... matechange
Empty shelves in Caracas. Food riots in West Bengal and Mexico. Warnings of hunger in Jamaica, Nepal, the Philippines and sub-Saharan Africa. Soaring prices for basic foods are beginning to lead to political instability, with governments being forced to step in to artificially control the cost of bread, maize, rice and dairy products.
Turned out it was true and has not gotten any better.
Rice traders hit by panic as prices surge

What does the MRE-enthusiast think of this? I assume everyone here has a decent supply of food in case of shortages. But i also assume MRE's, freeze dried & canned foods are being sold more and more because of this.

First off, I think the title "Global food crisis looms as climate change and fuel shortages bite" is crap. Take out "climate change and" and you actually have an accurate title.

As for "climate change"...guess what? At least in my part of the world, the climate changes daily...if not hourly. In fact, just today, it was cloudy this morning, sunny this afternoon, and then raining this evening. But you don't see me panicking and running out to the store to stock up on bread and milk.

I guess that makes me an ozone-decimating, glacier-melting, baby-seal-clubbing global-warming/cooling/changing non-conformist.

But back to your real point...

It'll be interesting to see if this "rice panic" story has legs. There's certainly a lot of concern in the financial markets lately. But I would have thought there'd be some sort of "corn crisis" based on the way the US subsidizes farmers to grow corn for ethanol instead of for food.

Maybe corn is more of a US-centric thing whereas rice is more of a staple food to more people in the world.

How about you guys outside of the US? What's your corn intake like (no crude jokes, please) :-) Corn, canned corn, cream corn, popcorn, Corn Flakes, Fritos (corn chips), corn tortillas, candy corn? Ok...maybe not that last one...but I do likes me some candy corn!
