if you could have only one rifle what would it be. I think you can see my choice.

I voted AR-15 but it's really a much tougher choice. If I just wanted something cheap to plink with...or something that I knew could stand up to some pretty shitty conditions and take some pretty shitty ammo then an AK might be the best best. But I'd still rather have an AR-15 for reliability and accuracy.
I don't actually have either one yet but my plan so far has been to pick up a Bushmaster M4-A3 type of AR-15 and then a nice AK from
Vector Arms to round out the collection.
But all that just went out the window when I read that HK is going to be releasing a civilian version of the HK-416 (5.56) and HK-417 (7.62). Those are supposed to be some fine rifles:

Yes, the m-16 and variants are nice, but the cheap ammo has dried up, wonder why ?
I'll take the AK, cheap ammo, runs forever, almost impossible to jam...

I buy the remington ammo at walmart 55gr 5 bucks a box plus tax thats not a bad deal. About 275$ for 1000 rounds. The cheapest i have ever gotten 1000 rounds is 200.00 bucks and that was crappy ammo.

Hi,
nice baby
Don't you reload your ammo? I do that for my .44 ctgs as manufactured ammo are realy too expensive here.
Well, for a revolver, an old manual Rock-Chucker is far enough but I wouldn't do it that way if I had to fill some 30 round magazines...

The choice between an AK-47 or a M16 depends also on the purpose you are going to give the rifle.
If the rifle is only for plinking in an Arizona backyard, I'd opt for the M16. But if this backyard was located in some remote Afghan desert I surely want the AK!
The HK 416 is in fact NOT a M16 type of rifle. It looks like one, but the interior system (gas driven piston) is completely different from that of an ordinary M16. I agree my opinion is open to discussion...
The carbine versions of the M16's -the M4's- are sometimes troublesome in the desert: Due to high outside temperatures the gas pressure rises, what makes the gun's recycling action too fast. Jams occure frequently.
The short barrels makes the gun powder burn outside the barrel, producing large muzzle blast, which occasionaly attracts unfriendly gun fire.
(You will not find this information in the official evaluations. Just talk to the soldiers who've been in Afghanistan and you will know!)
And wait for the HK 417 (7.62mm NATO) if you want a rifle with more 'wound ballistic punch'!
Conclusion: I'd take the AK-47.

So I take it that when you run out of ammo you're going to remove that ridiculous-looking scope off that weapon and use it for a club?
Jeesh...

I love my AR15, but if I had to make the choice I'd pick the AK every time for reliability issues.. I don't need to be accurate all the time, but it's important that it goes boom when I pull the trigger... plus my AR has a bull barrel so it's heavy as hell anyway..
Bishop - all that steel cased ammo makes my AR afraid, that stuff voids my warranty and isn't really meant to be run through most ARs.

I guess I'd choose what I've got on hand, a Ruger Mini 14 for .223 and a Springfield M1A for 7.62... I've got many cans of U.S surplus for both, plus several Russian cans per also !
They are essentially the same design, a modified M1 garand action, rugged as Hell, and easy to maintain.
I've even got a can of Russkie .45 stashed away for my Colt Lightweight Commander, although I've never fired any of them through it...
Then there's my hall-sweeper, an old Remington model 11, 5 rounds of # 4 buckshot, hardly any recoil !
As I live in ' The Democratic Peoples Republic of Kalifornia' , I don't think I'll be getting a AK anytime soon, looks too 'Nasty' !
Nor an AR, come to think of it, as It's 'Black and Nasty'
