hi all
i have strange problem with my computer. i got a new mainboard in my computer and installed XP prof.
so far so good. now:
everytime i come into my room (where the computer is running) and switch on the roomlight the sound (you normally hear it when you stick on a USB stick or something like this) is playing. and when i switch the lights off the take-away-sound (sound when you stick off your usb stick) is playing.
why the hell is this? i would understand it if the roomlight is connected with my computer but this is a real strange story...

Shitty wiring would be my guess, your PC is getting a mild power surge or something, that happens to equal the power required to fire up a USB device or something.. try measuring the voltage/amps on the switch when you turn the switch on and off.. then plug your PC into an UPS and don't worry about it anymore.

It sounds like you have a desktop PC so my advice might not apply since I'm using a laptop but...
With my laptop, everytime you plug in the power it makes a little beeping sound. Then when you remove the power, it makes another beeping sound. In some hotels I stay in, the light switch is wired into some of the electrical outlets - so if I switch off the light, I hear my laptop's power-disconnect sound.
If you're not using a laptop, I'd go with what BigMark is suggesting...shitty wiring. Do you have a UPS or surge protector?

Yes, that's my professional IT diagnosis.. I'd love to throw that out there when I was at work.. PC having problems? Shitty wiring.. lol. (I work IT helpdesk... for a title company.. ouch)

i dont have a UPS and there are many wires - but i dont think the wires are responsible for that because everyting works fine.
i am counting on the new mainbord - my old didnt used to do this strange problem.
yes kman - i have a overvoltage protection.
thanks for your opinions guys!

Probably the new motherboard has a higher current draw than the old power supply can handle... any fluctuations caused by light switches etc will cause the overloaded p/s to hiccup.
get a bigger PC power supply !

sorry,
i didnt meant to call you a liar,
but fact is :
system needs specific events to happen to play pre-defined soundfiles, and if it does, the sounds are only part of much bigger workin-process...
like the sounds we talk about, they are defined for device connect events:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Shemes\Apps\.Default\DeviceConnect\.Current
so if there would be any voltage problems/differences from turning on lights in the room, that makes the computer starting a DeviceConnect process, playin specific sound, but what happens next??? process just doesent disapear??? maybe next thing in line is givin the device a name like F: or tryin to read devices invisible system files, and because there is no device, process comes to an error that results in displaying pre-defined error messages...
ohhhh, now i got it

your light switch also controls a seperate power outlet in the wall where you have a printer or scanner plugged in, something that is connectet to your PC, that can be the only possible reason...
EDIT:

ohhh BigMark and kman already said the same thing...
well sorry guys, time for me to turn my computer off and do something else, i am startin to go paranoid.... xD
