Has anyone been in jail, or prison. I got to spend about 10 hrs. in a southside Virginia county jail, 2002. I was given a tray of breakfast, about 0530. Included 2 large sausage patties, 3 peices of toasted white bread, a half of a banana(with peel), a scoop of strawberry jam(as if it had been scooped out of a 5 gallon bucket of jam), several slabs of margarine, an 8 oz. skim milk and a cup of coffee. I scarfed it all down, as I knew I was'nt guilty of DUI.

But would you go back for seconds?

No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once..... Does that count? (and by the way, while there I did save money with GEICO auto insurance!).

I've visited a few jails and prisons, though not as a live-in guest. For the most part, I think I could say that for a local detention/holding facility, you were probably served a better breakfast than what I've seen served in other local facilities for any meal.

You are right, MCIera. I was very surprised. I would not expect that from Richmond or Rykers Island. The sausage was excellent. Aunt Bee would be proud, but anyhow, makes one not want to DUI. Takes one to know one.

Interesting, everyone I know tells me to avoid the sausage if I go to jail.. <pun intended>
For real though.

unfortunately i have also had the please of breakfast in the slammer/drunktank. too my surprise was pretty good. similar to what you described. even in the same state. my stay was in southwest virginia lots of really small towns, lots of road checks, lots of gas stations with beer. you know the rest. anyhow yeah jail food is not that bad.

I spent some time in Chesapeake, VA, working on hurricane relief a few years ago and we had a few lunches "catered" from the city jail.

It was a sack lunch with 2 baloney and cheese sandwiches (dry), an apple, and a carton of some kind of fruit drink. The police officers we had working with us said that it was the same thing the inmates get every day for lunch.

Believe or not, it was a welcome change from the MRE's we were eating for most meals.

If you saved a few condiments from the MREs so that the bologna wasn't dry, I could see that.

Don't know if this is what they really do serve, but the image below is supposedly representative of the food that is served in the Glendale CA City Jail. Since Aramark is their food vendor, and there has been considerable criticism of the food that Aramark provides in their correctional catering, I'd be inclined to exercise some degree of skepticism. Glendale also offers an alternative incarceration program for minimum risk offenders who are sentenced to weekend jail time at the LA County Jail ($85/night).
