Romanian Constitution ask every able bodied male between 19 and 55 years old to be ready to go at war in case of. I'm only 37, also I'm certified Search & Rescue technician (one of only 14 volunteer/non-professional in Romania), mountaineering, scuba diving and advanced first aid qualified. So, I was asked to join the recon troop on one of Romanian Vanatori de Munte (mountain troops) brigades as wilderness first aider and designated marksman.

I want to thank the guys which helped me with gear, Housil, Norge, sw432pd, Cracker, Garron, ToxicCarbon, Yowie, Nicodim and, last but not least, TurtleNomad. I hope she will read this. :)

Lots of people recall how tense the cold war was, but I think that now 20-some years later things are even more unstable in the world. I hope and pray for your safety ak70g2. In the event of something breaking out would you possibly be assigned to a medical or hospital unit?

The Cold War was a very stable period of time, was "we against them". After that... In the '90s, breakup of Yugoslavia, at Romanian SW borders, now the breakup of Ukraine, at NE borders... You don't know who "them" are.

In my case, I was assigned in an reconnaissance troop, so I'll make patrols beyond enemy lines to gather information, so on. No hospital posting for me. Actually, I prefer to be with my team in the indian country. Bad scout habits.

Actually ak70g2, I would respectfully point out to you that it may not be bad scout habits as much as cameraderie/brotherhood. These fellow brave men with whom you serve are like your family, just as my crew-chief and second aid-man on my M-113 ambulance track and later my hummer ambulance were my family, and you and I would not want to leave them. I recall reading stuff about USSR spetsnaz units who had very close cameraderie because of their training and missions and even after they were discharged/de-mob'd they were still brothers.

I can't really compare Our Web gear to other nations as I never had a chance to examine it
Can give an opinion

When I went in 1979 we were issued M 1956 web gear. canvas H suspenders two canvas M 14 magazine pouches
(I think they were for the M 14, they were to big for the twenty round M 16 magazine faded early 60's dates, could be wrong)

Canvas canteen cover and plastic canteen, Canvas first aid pouch, canvas compass carrier
Canvas shelter half
M 56 Butt pack with a little plastic window to put your name on a section of cardboard
If I remember correctly we would put one MCI in the butt pack
Or your WW 2 dated flat mess kit if you were going to be fed in the field
OD rain poncho fastened on top
Still had the straight handle E tool and canvas carriers
The ruck sacks were Vietnam era Alice packs without frames
Canvas Pistol belt had brass fittings and hardware
The suspenders had sort of a spring hook and loop
All the other gear had the slide lock to attach it to the pistol belt

My thoughts on US web gear was The H suspenders got tangled up if you took them off
When that stuff got wet it swelled up and was very hard to adjust
The Alice packs were very hard to get the straps adjusted at shoulders.
That is.. they would slowly work their way loose
Hard to get the straps adjusted when the Alice pack was taken on and off.
It would grab the suspender straps

A very few guys had the newer Nylon Y suspenders.
Latter the canvas stuff was withdrawn and the nylon stuff was universal
I liked it better for the reason that when it got wet it did not swell up. It get not get tangled up quite so bad. It seemed easier to add additional stuff. I never saw a issue Nylon But pack, they were all aftermarket. Although the canvas was still used seemingly forever. I will say when the two quart canteen became widespread issue, hated having that thing bounce on my hip.
I would store it inside my ruck and it would leak.
Also though the Folding E tool was better to carry but harder to use. Older straight handle were still carried on Jeeps and you could swing them like a pick or chop small saplings for camouflaging

Funny the term Web Gear was in widespread use late 70's early 80's. I understand the term dates from the Spanish/American War. I don't know when, but LBE began to be used and totally replaced the term LBE.
I have no idea what they term they use now
If you said that now, it may be like using the term Steel Pot for the Kevlar

I never used any European web gear except the Austrian bread bag. I ued it for deer hunting to carry rain poncho, Swiss canteen, rope, hunting knife, rags to clean you hands of blood flashlight and snacks.

For that I liked it
