  on topic too

rt I know what you are saying. Edged weapons give me the creeps really. I keep my old FS safely locked away.

They are deceptively sleek or "pretty" but they are devilish things really.

Maximum respect to all medics wherever, past or present.

biscuits, I know the firearms regulations in the UK are pretty strict (trying to say it politely, sensitive topic) compared to ours, but what are the restrictions concerning edged weapons? Alot of police here in the U.S carry blades for "last resort backup" but are there similar regs for civilians and police where you are? Some of the laws here are pretty ridiculous with regard to machetes considering that most back-alley muggings don't involve the assailant using an unwieldy machete, and of course there has yet to be a case involving a Spetsnaz blade launcher because I guarantee there are still some circulating here.

If you are caught with a blade, unless its for camping, hobbyist, maintenence or work related purposes, you are pretty much guaranteed some jail time.

The 15-25 age groups are stabbing and killing each other on a sometimes daily basis here. Thats the issue.

So the law has over the past 20 years or so managed to more or less completely dis- arm law abiding citizens, while the bad guys of whatever type or age are more heavily armed than anytime in history.

But the Queen will protect us law -abiding subjects

Well biscuits, that situation plus the royal protection you all get, could well explain the lyrics of some of Iron Maiden's hit songs which alledgedly poke fun at things there. Still my favorite band though!

biscuit, you're right. Edged and blade weapons are to be respected as the same as the firearms. Blades are noble IMHO.I have been collecting them since I was a kid back home in the islands. My grandfather always carried a small pocket knife and he always kept it sharp and in his house he never had a firearm but he always had his machetes shiny sharp. He was a man that was raised in the country side and always worked on farms so you can imagine. He used to tell me stories of knife fights back in the day and they were gruesome, specially when machetes were involved. We still have his blades at my parents home even though he passed away 14 plus years ago,his legacy continues.
I like both though.
But the same as the firearms, blades are not the problem but the pople that miss use them....
When it comes to blades it is said that only two people use then..."either loonies or those that know how to use them..." some times you can find both!!

The following pic is graphic....TO THE MODERATORS...Feel free to take pic out if it causes too much trouble!

Nothing bad there.. with some cleaning up and stitches he's as good as new.

I do like knifes, but I don't really collect them. I have some practical ones.. And above all.. military victorinox pockey knives.
I even have one I wouldn't sell for a billion dollars, but that's because of a story I'm not going to discuss here (it's not something violent, to prevent miss thoughts here.. ). But a good pocket knife is something you really need.

I don't treat them the same way as firearms though. My pocket knives and combat knives (only have 2 "real" knives) are lyings out of sight, but not secure in the weapons safe. Not to be used in case of trouble, because knife fighting is plain stupid. Untrained it will put you in a vulnerable position, and second.. you don't want to kill someone.. Not even if he's in your home. I'd rather let someone take my valuables (.. just finished being a student.. valuables.. haha.. never mind) then getting that burdon on my neck.
Sure, someone may one day kill me with my own gun.
But they'll have to beat me to death with it because it's empty.

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.

I agree with most of what you said Bypah and Ted, quite right.

Its intersting, I think in the past 200 years in the west, men have become "blade shy" remember untill the early 19th century many men wore a sword of some kind as normal. In 16 century London, Shakespeare had his own sword, (its a great basket handled rapier about 3.5 foot long, saw it in Stratford Upon Avon at his house) Ben Johnson killed a man with his rapier and an actor in Shakespeares company killed 2 men and finally got killed himself in a fight. Marlowe was killed by a 2 inch deep dagger wound above the eye at Deptford after a drunken fight about a tavern bill. These were equivalent to their Colts, Glocks, barettas, Jerichos of today.
These were the artistic elite. So lord knows what everyone else was donig

As late as the 1850s, guys were duelling with swords on Wimbledon common, a favourite venue.

Anyone seen the Duellists? A great movie about a 20 year long duel.

The pic is graphic, but may be instructive to younger people looking in, maybe with "romantic" notions of weapons. Thats the reality, saturday night in an A&E unit, 100+ stitches, AND you lost your wallet and mobile. Not cool.

Interesting that the wounds look exterme and graphic, but they are not fundementally life threatening.

In the cavalry, at the dawn of the 20th Century in the Uk, got the use of the sabre point to a fine art. A 3" thrust was an instant kill. Anyone trooper using the slash as opposed to the point, was disciplined in training.

The 1908 pattern sabre is the most scientifically designed sword ever to be generally issued I believe. It had a highly advanced ergonomic and efficient handle, to "point" the sword tip to a precise spot. Its hard to find one for under £2000 now.

The FS knife is really a mini rapier, if thought like that. Its effects are akin to an edged weapon version of a bullet wound.
