I have the Matterhorns also and wore them during a winter bivouac in real snow for a couple of days.

No insult taken. I've had to deal with the "why be ready" types too much over the years. It seems the only thing that penetrates is to show them government backing for what you are saying. (I was a nurse and paramedic in another life)

In the boots department I've had good luck with the Bellevilles. I have a pair of the 639Z CT side zips that are the handiest things around. Great to toss on if you have to hop out of bed and go. Which here lately with the stray dog packs chasing and attacking my goats has been often. (Side note: If people really like their dogs why do they think dumping them in the pretty country side when they can't afford them is a good idea?) Also the 880 ST's with the booties are great in snow and slush. I use them working on fences and cutting wood.

Those spoon/forks are nice and very light. But, knowing me, I would end up losing it. I've done a lot of minimalist camping over the years. Ground sheet, lined poncho combo works for me. I've stayed out for two weeks of more with just flour, rice, dried veggies and fruit. Toss in what I scrounged and I often gained weight. With the snivel gear comment I was thinking of a bag that I saw on another site that was 60 percent comfort items. (I thought it was AR15 at the time but it wasn't).

Really though my location is about the best it could be, bugging in place is my best option. Any flood waters that get near me will have the state turned back into an ocean. I'm at the end of a dead end road in a state forestry. It's my parents old place and we of course have wood burners along with the LP tanks. Couple of ponds with creeks nearby. I also know of four permanent springs on near by lands.

I grew up in these hills in the 60's for us a larder with a few months of supplies is a way of life and has been forever. I really don't understand the "buy food on the way home every day mentality". I guess I'm just a dinosaur in the way I look at things.

No BOB, but as I work out in the boonies, I keep my vehicles stocked, with MRE's, water, sleeping bags, small stove, pots, and firestarters...
Normally no firearms in the vehicles, but just takes a minute to get them.
When I'm traveling, I always have one or more pistolas with me. (unless I'm flying ! )

Dirtbag,

Interesting. I don't think anybody have explored the topic of firearms before. I usually don't take guns to the woods unless its hunting season otherwise I just think it brings too many problems unless your in bear country and the forest/park staff has warned you in advance. Then I can see that.

Case in point, two months ago I was hiking up near Mt. Si in western WA state and I encountered a really young guy wearing, what looked to be, a Sig Sauer 9mm on his hip. While it was a US national forest he does have the right to carry (I was hoping he did have a permit) but the fact is this guy was young, in the company of several ladies and he did pass by some backcountry rangers on the way to the top. I just figured guys like that are just trouble waiting to happen.

On another topic, you mention you carry a sleeping bag. Do you carry a four season bag, or just three season? I have spent some time in CA during different parts of the year (mostly in the high desert) and found a two season bag does the job.

I, too work out in the boondocks but I carry a surveyors vest that has most of my tools and snacks. It's versatile but not the best and I would not take this along in place of a BOB. My BOB stays at my house always packed.

Odds are good that the 'young guy' did have a carry permit, although he really didn't need one to open carry. I think he was smart, as the most dangerous thing to encounter is the backwoods doper...
National Forests go by whatever state law says...
I have both an Oregon and a Utah CCW permit which allows me to carry concealed in 32 states.

As to sleeping bags, winter bags in the winter, summer bags the rest of the time.
I'm not really prepping, just common sense when I travel thru snow country etc.

I'm the one who will be warm and well fed and probably helping others if stuck somewhere on the road...

Dirtbag,

Hmmm...didn't know that your CCW was good in 32 states. Well for a stove what do you use? I started with a original Jetboil and then this year I upgraded to a MSR pocket rocket with windshield. I also have a Esbit stove as backup. I literally swear that Jetboil will do the trick no matter where you are. Jetboil also have a lighterweight model that is half the size of its orginal model. I'm saving up for that.

On the sleeping bag note, what kind of brand do you use? I have one NorthFace, one extreme Cold Weather bag from Norway that I traded Norge for, and a REI featherweight bag. Plus a issue three modular military sleep system. The MSS is way to bulky in my mind but comes in handy..

AS I collect campstoves, I have hundreds of choices. Currently, in my pickup I have a Coleman 550, Several Primus Kerosene stoves, and a Coleman F1 (somewhere, seem to have misplaced it ), with a coffee pot and a cook kit.
1 case of MRE's, and about 5 gallons of water.

Sleeping bags are Coleman winter bags, pretty cheap, but then I'm not planning on spending World War 3 in them...

Summer bags are also cheap 3 season mummy bags.
Again, this is not SHTF gear, it's 'I'm broken down/stuck in the snow ' gear.
Enough for several long cold days at most.

Speaking of Matterhorn boots reminded me of this housil: do you follow the "official" American military practice of "speed-lacing" boots? This is where you adjust the laces and then tie each end so that they are quick to get on and off your feet. I recall actually being verbally reprimanded by a brand new ROTC cadet in the field because he thought that "speed-lacing" might make it hard to remove boots from a frost-bite casualty, and I'd have to use my bayonet to cut his laces off. After respectfully explaining to the confused young man that A. I was a medic and therefore was not issued a bayonet, B. the Geneva Convention actually prohibits sharpening bayonets, and C. that's why God invented the multi-tool, he looked rather embarrassed and told me to "carry on."

Geneva Convention actually prohibits sharpening bayonets ???
WTF?

We sharpened ours, as they were issued with a sharpening stone, built into the scabbard!

We sharpened our K-Bars too!

Those who had E-Tools sharpened them too!

Now the trench knife with the brass knuckles was frowned on, but war is a nasty business, and where I was, Corpsmen and Medics were Heavily armed, and didn't wear red crosses either.

Still are, AFAIK...

Well dirtbag, I guess that comes from having a unit commander who was so by-the-book that he probably would have lasted, in a fire-fight, about as long as it takes me to write this reply to you. I have not studied the Geneva Convention articles, and during Desert Shield and Desert Storm, we covered the red crosses on our ambulance but we were not issued bayonets with our 1970s era M-16 "shorty" pos's. All we had besides them were a couple smoke grenades to mark for a medivac. Now I'm thinking I probly sounded rather idiotic in my posting, but some unit commanders had their own way of doing things, and mine was no exception.
