Remembering Family Heros

I know this is an older post but I just wanted to share my family's military history. My grandfather joined the army in 1936. He stayed with the U.S. Army until 1947 when he decided to join the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Germany at some point but I'm not sure when or for how long exactly. He passed away when I was 8 years old so I didn't get to know him very well.

Does anyone know if I could possibly get his military records? I'd love to know more about his military career.

My grandfather was a bit of a ladies man. Though I cannot 100% verify they were truly prostitutes, that's just how the story of that photo has been passed down from Grandma

It seems your Grandma was a little jealous to me these are "ordinary" locals in typical Bavarian attire.

Re: US Army Personal Records

In 1973, a massive fire destroyed millions of US Army personal files, records of service members and their service histories. The only way to find out if any records of a family service member survived is to ask the NPRC to search their files. I did so and got lucky that some of my grandfathers war records survived. I’m recommending, because I believe members here would be interested, to request your family members records for a couple of reasons not the least that even mine are getting brittle. The first reason is that if you do find reasonably intact records it’s been my experience that, for whatever reasons, the file contained at the NPRC was usually incomplete. The second reason is that as far as good ideas are concerned, I recommend replenishing the file with lost or missing records if you have them. The NPRC accepts records and is ideal for historical purposes and you would be doing a veteran a favor alive or deceased.

i knew about this...thats likely why my request to the National Archives for copies of his full service record has still not been received. .. been waiting 8 months now... im guessing it won't happen
