Any suggestions on a 3 day patrol/assault pack?
Re: Any suggestions on a 3 day patrol/assault pack?
Thanks gentleman for all the advice. Davy, I think I may have to do a swap with you on something just not sure what. I did look at the hyperlinks everybody sent over and I think we may be overdoing it on the size of the daypacks. To me the Bergan and Snugpack look to me to be more than a 2 day pack more along the lines of a 5 or 7 day long range pack. I mean I have a ALICE pack for longer trips but I was thinking of something like the CAMELBAK where I can take that along on a winter day hike or snowshow trip and have enough if things got bad. Also something with which I can easily get in and out of the pack for something if need be.
DAVY, I have to admit there were some things on that highlander pro-force website that looked really cool to have. I was taking a second look at some of the day packs they have to offer. Speakng of which, what do you go out hiking or ruck-ing with?

Re: Any suggestions on a 3 day patrol/assault pack?
hi treesuit,im looking very hard at kit just now, ready for autumn-winter camping(i dont like camping in scotland in summer,as midges (no-see-um?)are a nightmare)my normal kit is a plce bergan with side pouches to match role, and a snugpak response pak with a bladder.
but im starting to feel it on climbs,i can still do it but the fun is going out of it.
so im looking to change all my kit,ive analysed it ,and im thinking well, the only the main kit i have in the main compartment is a sleep system and a dry bag ,so i mthinking of getting an unframed bag with vent baffles made up ,using a plce top flap and plce zips on the side and front for plce side pouches and im looking at some type of belt bag to carry 24 hours of food and gear(maxpedition ,snugbag or a british army battle bag)
im also looking at food (orps or dehydrated?)
cooking jetboil or stay with my crusader system
and a bit of comfort with a snugpak stratosphere

Sodjer,
I hear what your saying, I'm right there with you on trips even though I'm still in great condition and work out daily. You have some great suggestion for tailor made kit. Maxpedition is really good in my mind. I bought two items from them this past spring and they are still holding up from lots of day trips and abuse.
I can swear JETBOIL is the only way to go for cooking. I still have my original verison and use it constantly even when stopped for a short time to brew up a cup of coffee. I used a bigger JETBOIL this winter up on MT Rainer and I'm suprised it made it. If you don't have one look into the system, it's worth it.
Even after all the good advice so far I'm still unsure on a 3 day pack. Has anyone experienced or bought any packs from KIFARU? If so how good are they on those?

You mentioned some pricey items so i will mention the FILBE set.
It replaced ILBE, its nice, plenty of room, lots of extra pouches to customize, rugged as can be.
Im sure the bay has each part as well as full kits. (Full kits $400ish, but it seems you may just want the main pack)
If you want some links let me know

Mystery Ranch packs are made in my town - I wonder if they have cheaper pricing at the factory (if they even sell at the factory). I'll have to check up on that some time and let you folks know! Bozeman's also the birth place for Gibson Guitars and a bunch of Blackhawk's gear like holsters and vests. I've been meaning to see what kind of deals and/or factory-seconds are available from Blackhawk and MR for a while, here's hoping I get a chance in the near future

hey treesuit ,we can only stave off old age,i work 3 miles from home and walk every day
rain or shine, and do a 4 mph 25 miler most sundays, and have a 20 year old son to compeet with
i think it may be jetboils and dehydrated from now on,my only concern is the cold, jet boils came out as i finished with the military and i found them fragile,(i know a few squaddies who ate cold chow because of them )but i read they are more reliable.
usmc do a few good modular packs http://www.defcon5italy.com/en/product/ ... 24_od.html

NNF, do you have some pictures of the FILBE? I can't see to find it in Ebay general search. Is it supposed to be something better than the USMC ILBE? if you have links please post them, I'd like to take a look. I am trying to find a USMC MARPAT tarp but ebay has chinese copies and really rough used ones for sale. Very tough to find.
Sodjer, Saw that DEFCON5 pack and that's pretty cool to have, lots of customizing with all the pouches.
RulerYAk, you are correct MR does make their packs in Bozeman. Any chance finding out if its cheaper to pick them up at the factory rather on line?

Re: Any suggestions on a 3 day patrol/assault pack?
NNF,
I just checked out that website and it looks like the USMC will be getting a more improved pack that's similar to the MOLLE pack that the US Army has. It's pretty similar in a lot of ways: from the shoulder harness setup to the frame to the assault pack but the bag is much different but it's got a few Army MOLLE ideas built from what I saw.
I went back and looked at MR for their 3 day assault pack and I saw two things that kind of put me off. One was the outer pockets on the sides. They were open but had elastic webbing on the tops and were not angled in any way as if you put a canteen in there you can't reach it. Second, it doesn't look like you can lash or cinch anything down on the inside where there second sleeve is,or maybe I'm missing something. With camelback they have their different modifications which are good in my mind.
Unfortunately a new questions comes to mind and that is, could the camelbak tri zip function more in the way of just a three day pack? How about 5 or 6 days?
