I think it's just a case of "because we can" or because it reminds them of home / better times. I doubt that they actually need the alcohol, it's just a way to escape the stress, fear.. or more likely .. boredom and routine.
Sure, someone may one day kill me with my own gun.
But they'll have to beat me to death with it because it's empty.
