Well, whadda ya think?

I'd like to not argue about this as I believe it will get the thread closed rather quickly, but I'd like to see what people think about it in general, and our European friends can certainly throw their hat into the ring. Just a vote and a comment, not a diatribe, which is certainly hypocritical of me seeing as I just posted my thoughts on it. That would get this deleted methinks.

For me it's the wait, and the fact I have to pay for others health care. That's succinct enough.

Edited because I did post a diatribe, whoops.

Thanks,

-M

Very difficult for me to say if it's good or bad. So i voted both. I think it's important that people care for themselves and their family, and therefor they should pay for their own health care. But you will always have a group of people who can't take care of themselves. I don't mind paying a little extra taxes for them. But i would prefer living in a country where everybody actually *can* take care of themselves.

Quick reply from me...I'm not a big fan of socialized medicine but I realize there are a lot of problems with the current US healthcare system. Personally, I lay most of the blame at the feet of the Healthcare Insurance companies. Instead of having a qualified doctor dictate my care, there's some mininmum-wage earning, telephone-operating, claim-rejecting, button pushing monkey at the insurance company who decides what care I can get and when.

Dump the healthcare insurance companies and HMOs and come up with something better...which automatically excludes a government run, rationed healthcare system. After all...the government runs everything else so well, don't they?

I imagine we're going to hear all about how well the socialized healthcare systems work in other countries. For me, I haven't really had any problems with the US system (thank goodness)...but I always keep my fingers crossed when something new medically comes up.

The stats I've seen are .01 percent of Britons are leaving to America for health care, which was like 50k people, but I imagine that number will grow, I don't have the figure on Canadians, but I know it's more people than that, they just come south, so it's not so hard.

Blook:

I see what you're saying, but they already have things for people who need help like medicare/medicade, which I'm sure you will say suck, BUT instead of just the people who already receive the socialized care, we'll all be stuck on a program like that, thats why I can't say both, its just already available.
UTMB in Galveston has had to start checking the resident status of people checking in for "free" cancer care, and turning those who are illegal away because the state can't cover the amount of care needed.. of course those people are just going to go to Harris county (Houston) instead and put the burden there.

Hi,
talking of the Brits, it's funny to see that when they come to France (or Spain...) on holiday they take one extra day or week to have a tooth cared, a cyst removed or just for a free check up.
When I first brought my kid to the village dentist last month, she first asked in English “do you speak French?” I answered in Breton “Ya, un tammig” (“yes, a little bit”) “ooh I see” she said in French , “ so you’re not English?”
There are many British residents and tourist in our 1000 inhabitant village and the first thing they do when they arrive on the continent is to visit the dentist and the physician. I’ve been told by many British friends that their healthcare system is really crap.

In France it works globally very well but the main problem is caused by the abuse: people taking two weeks of free holiday for a cold or even for no reason (“a little bit tired” is just enough!) and sometime, if they have a very friendly doctor, he sends them one, two weeks or even a month to the French Riviera or to ski station in the Alps PAID BY THE TAXES because “they need good air and rest”!
It’s just the same problem at the chemist’s : if you need 13 pills, the physician just prescribes you two 12 boxes and the last 11 pills will end in the best case on an African or East European market or in the worst case in the trash bin.
There are even some people from Africa and Eastern Europe who spend their days visiting all the doctors they can (for free with a visitor’s social healthcare card) . The invent themselves an imaginary disease or even have a sick associate , then they take the prescriptions and spend the next weeks visiting the pharmacies, collect the medicines and bring them to their country and sell them on the local market. It sounds funny but there are some billions and billions euros that are lost that way by our insurance system and now they speak about using a US (or British  ) style healthcare system…

My knee needs replaced, and I have a bad cold. I guess I'll go to Canada like my Uncle. He had to come back to the USA to have his knee replaced.

i dont agree with universal health care. i do believe we need some health care reform. but there is no free healthcare in the us. unless you dont work then it is free for you. but not free for me. it would be my tax money that would send you too the doctor. also if we arent linked financially to our healthcare it will be abused. people will go to the doctor every time they sneeze. if they must first pay a deductible or have some sort of out of pocket expense, then they will think twice about going to the clinic for a runny nose. i work very hard. i pay a pretty good amount of money for my family to be able to be covered with some good insurance. why should someone who sits around on welfare refusing to work or even worse who is here illegally be able to get that coverage. they shouldn't its a slap in the face of us all that pay taxes. i understand some people are disabled and cant work. that is okay as long as they are truly disabled thats not there fault. it is the sponges on society that are on welfare. that are completely able to work. that just plain refuse to work. due to the fact that they never learned a trade and working in fast food is beneath them. hey we have tobacco fields in virginia full of illegal immigrants. why dont we send them back and force every one on welfare to do those jobs. once everyone has a job then they can get some healthcare. just my two cents. feel free to disagree i have very thick skin.
