Pop-Tarts

Post by Nawt » Sun Sep 02, 2007 4:21 am

Dear fellow members,

I received two Pop-Tarts as a gift when I bought my first T-rations. The thing is, are they part of any MRE or is it civvie stuff??

Any info would be helpfull.
Thank you in advance.
Kind regards,

Nawt.

hi!

YES they are part of the MRE. in the MRE they are packed in brown bags and it says: TOASTER PASTRY on it. a toaster pastry and a pop-tart is the same.

the silver one you got is made by KELLOGGs and is also used in the army in the field-kitchen or in den barrak.

on the photo you see a frosted blueberry pop-tart.

Hello German_EPA,

Thank you for posting.
having read it, It bacame clear. So they are ready to eat. I was already wondering since it reads "do not microwave in this pouch". I wasn't sure if you could eat them straight away or to put them in the oven first. I guess the 'frosted' doesn't mean that you need to eat it frozen, which was my first thought.

Your's looks nice to chew. I'll give mine a try, when I found the toaster pastry in an mRE and compare them for taste.
Thanks.

Nawt.

no - of course its not frozen - frosted means the it looks like its iced.

you can even put them in the toaster (thats why they are called TOASTER pastry.) and the microwave... but how you said - its ready to eat too. they are delicius out of the refrigerator in my mind. :D

What you received is the commercially packed item that is sold in grocery stores. But why should it matter whether if it is from an MRE or if it is commercially packaged if it is the same item? As the world food industries adapt the technologies that have been developed by civilian and military governmental entities, I think you'll probably see more civilian commercial products being included into MREs, not just of the sake of lower costs, but also to bring product familiarity to the troops. Rather than eating something that appears to be some sort of mystery meat item, soldiers (who are also commercial consumers like the rest of us,) will have food items that they are more familiar with from home. I use the Pop Tarts as regular items in my emergency supplies and do recommend them as an emergency pantry item for "72-hour kits"

With regards to the Pop Tarts (and similar "toaster pastry" items from other manufacturers,) they can be eaten directly from the box, warmed in a toaster, or warmed for about 10 seconds in a microwave. I generally eat them directly from the package. The "frosted" refers to the sugar glazing that is on the pastry. The "do not microwave in pouch" warning on the package is because the packaging material is mylar and because it will reflect microwaves.

Also, I don't think the inclusion of the toaster pastry item was an original idea of the military. Pop Tarts and similar products have been around long before there were even MREs, and before their adaptation as a MRE component, they were being served to passengers on airlines as the airline industry started their downward spiral in overcoming costs. Those of us in the US know all too well that food service on an airline is pretty much a thing of the past these days though, and you're not even likely to get even a Pop Tart on most domestic flights.

Hi MCIera,

Thank you for the explanation. w.r.t. MRE/civvie

The thing was, since I wasn't sure what it was I didn't want to go far off topic w.r.t. (army)rations/MRE's. Therefore I asked.

Here're my pics if the delicious Pop-Tart.

Regards, Nawt.
