Rations for Education
I'm teaching Grade 8 English today and they're in the process of reading a book called Parvana's Journey, about a girl traveling through Afghanistan masquerading as a boy to escape the Taliban, during the early stages of the war in 2001. They talk about rations and booby traps and Red Cross camps so I thought it would be cool to show them the real-deal, a nice HDR, or at the least the ones made after that period, when they switched from yellow to salmon packaging. I had to get rid of the peanut butter packet because some kids have a severe peanut allergy here and I don't need anyone possibly going into anaphylactic shock. Haha

This is great BTemple. I bet the kids loved it. Was there actually taste testing or just contents viewing. Either way, brilliant idea.

Yes they thought it was very cool!Mpitt wrote:This is great BTemple. I bet the kids loved it. Was there actually taste testing or just contents viewing. Either way, brilliant idea.
But sadly I didn't do a taste test... there were 20 kids in the class, so wouldn't have been nearly enough for all of them and also with the vast array of food allergies in the school I didn't want to take the chance of somebody getting sick.
Another teacher has 2 slots of the same course so I'll probably show her 2 groups the same thing when I get the chance.

Re: Rations for Education
Some of the kids will just forget about that but there will be a select few who will remember that for life. I remember some of the things that more interested/innovative teachers I had at school did, decades after I last met some of them

Re: Rations for Education
A bunch asked me where I got the ration and I said I bought a whole case and mentioned the fact that I review rations on YouTube.... a bunch of them have subscribed now! A lot of them seemed genuinely interested in the whole story behind HDR's, which certainly makes it all worth it!
