112-Year-Old Ham

Post by RoastBeastFan » Tue Jul 15, 2014 10:55 am

Here's a BBC story about a cured ham that's 112 years old, and whether or not it's still edible.

Yes, though they are not optimistic about the flavor. But I don't suppose anyone will really know till they try it.

I'd try it if there was a doctor standing by

I just remembered I have some 109 year old Quaker Oats and some 111 year old Blue Diamond almonds that would go perfectly with this ham. Some almond crusted baked ham and a bowl of oatmeal, breakfast of iron-stomached champions

Hahaha! Hey Rulerak - if I had some of your 111 year old oats and some of this ham, I wouldn't need a doctor, just you with a camera to prove to everyone on here my feasting of a nice 4oz piece of the ham and a hefty bowl of those oats!

Gee, it makes me want to see if I could contact the owner of the ham and inquire on him to sell me a 4 oz cut off of it..!

Who else here would just looooove to try some of that ham?

..Reminds me - I had Bierwurst from a 2008 EPA and it had a crack in it and kinda leaked.. well.. my buddy Doug & I ate it anyway.. that was 8 days ago. Still kickin'! And I got pics!

BTW, thankyou so much Rebraunjr for providing this EPA to me - I decided to fully document it and I am saving the box for my display shelf - only reason I did was alot of the food inside had squished packaging and I was afraid it wouldn't hold up over the years in my collection.

P.S. I'm sorry this Off-topic thread just got hijacked by me as what I think may be my first international ration review! I'll just put the rest of the pics on the International thread.

Back to that ham for one last comment on it - I wonder if it gets better with age like wine?

Not too flattering pic of me eating the scary Bierwurst!

Doug insisted he tried it first. Mr. Kilpatrick is just like me - crazy! lol

Looks perfectly fine - okay, my good pal Doug and I are going to eat it now.

See the slightly dried/hardened fat on the inner led? I think it sealed itself from spoilage - The Bierwurst smelled absolutely fine so there - passed visual/smell test so far.

Hmmm been waiting 6 years to try a Bierwurst.. so I'm going to eat it anyway.

I'm not sure if you can see where it is leaking when I peel back the label.

The leaking bierwurst that Doug & I ate is the one on the far left.. you can see the stain on the top where it is leaking.

Oh my gosh, you're not kidding, Bypah! From everything I've read about EPAs, they seem to hold up longer than any other ration!

I gotta say - that Bierwurst was pretty tasty! I will certainly acquire another Epa ot 2 down the road if I can. I love the coffee extract in them too - btw, I have a full set of photos for a quality review of this ration coming up soon.
