Hey there guys,
I'm finally buying a webbing set for a string of hiking/camping trips I have coming up and I recently found out about the Pattern 70 webbing used by the SADF. I really like the pouch set up, however the only place I can find it is on Varusteleka.fi and the shipping plus the price seems a bit much for canvas webbing.
I'm not familiar with pouch sizes, but if anyone has both sets of webbing, could you recommend a set of ALICE pouches that would pretty well replicate the Pattern 70 webbing and/or if it would be cheaper to just go with Pattnern 70 or vice versa?
-Thanks,
fdsman

If you couldn't get hold of 70 Pat, British 58 Pattern would be closer in look than ALICE webbing.
As SA was part of the commonwealth its military gear is similar to British.

Very basic set up pictured, Kidney pouches and two SLR magazine pouches.
There are quite a few pouches missing from that pic.

I can buy Pattern 70 Webbing, but I'm really more evaluating the cost of getting the genuine stuff, or buying some ALICE webbing and pouches that would serve the same basic function in a similar layout.Garron wrote:If you couldn't get hold of 70 Pat, British 58 Pattern would be closer in look than ALICE webbing.

What I was asking was what ALICE pouches I should buy to re-create the SADF webbing for a lower cost and/or if it would be cheaper to go with ALICE over Pattern 70, or Pattern 70 over ALICE.

Its really tempting to put a 'Let me google that for you' link up, and tbh this seems quite lazy. All you need is a picture of the SA70pat and a kit list of ALICE and match them up. http://www.Varusteleka.fi even gives you a list of what they sell in that set. As your in the US, I'd guess ALICE would be cheaper as its not used anymore and surplused.
This took me 2 minutes.
Belt,
Suspenders,
2 Canteen pouches
2 Ammo pouches (the SA webbing has pockets for SLR mags just about every where, 10 or 11 mags altogether most not held in the pouches)
2 Butt packs to replicate the kidney pouches
Small or medium ALICE backpack to replicate the daysack,
There isnt an ALICE version of the shoulder bag from what I saw on google.
70 Pat was designed for Bush war, long periods of time without resuply. the US webbing wasnt, I don't think it will have the same storage capacity.
I took a chance with the British webbing as if your the same FDSman I had words with on youtube about Britian not doing enough in Afghan I thought I'd troll a little
if your not it was mearly another option thats 10 times closer than ALICE will ever be.

I've been reconsidering British webbing since I'm looking into getting a rifle that's converted to take Bren mags. armynavydeals.com seems to have quite a good selection of British pattern webbing pouches and I think that combined with ALICE pouches and an ALICE belt and suspenders will make quite the webbing set.
