The gnostics came before even Jesus was born ( 1st century BCE or BC),before the Christian era. :shock: It means "knowledge" in ancient greek and their origins goes as far back to Plato,one of the famous greek philosophers.they simply questioned everything and that was one of the reasons the early fathers of the paleo-christian church considered them heretics amongst other things because they questioned the newly organized religion (CHRISTIANITY),their power base and its teachings.:shock:

Thank you for shedding some light on the issue. The Gnostics were mostly considered heretics not because they questioned the authority of the church but mainly because of their denial of the revealed truth of Christ and His authority over Judeo texts. Maybe that's what you meant but I hope this makes it more clear. But someone might ask -- where are they today? Answer: No More.

I am am definitely not an expert on religions! And I do know almost nothing about gnosticism. That must be clear by now. :(

But I like the simple idea of questioning what I am being told by authorities. Maybe just like the gnostics. They were not anti christians.

I don't know. Maybe is wasn't very popular to question everything and interest fainted in their beliefs. Or maybe they walked the same path as many other religions and subreligions: extermination by inquisition.
The Cathars and Templar monks didn't stop practising their religion voluntarely. Most were killed and tortured by the Church.

BTW: I do not blame the Bible, God or Jesus for all the mayem we produce. It's just us making a mess of it. We have been given beautiful book (New Testament) but we choose to ignore it, or interpretate it the way we like it ourselves the best, and calling it the Thruth.
