First Strike Rations Fireline Food?

Post by Treesuit » Sat Feb 02, 2008 1:58 am

Hey guys, I found this curious technical publication over at the US Forest Service’s technical publication website. Seems the USFS and the University of Montana did a study of fire line foods in 2006 or 07 and the relationship to peak performance on the fire line. The researchers gave the firefighters a choice when deciding what to have for lunch on the line.
What is interesting is that there is a paragraph on First Strike Rations. Seems those rations are popping up on the fire line. :o The report is a lot of research and conclusions on what is best for the firefighters as far as food and nutritional intake.

Here is the link if anybody is curious.

The R & D site is somewhat protected. When you come to the web page a box will come up asking for a username and password. Just type in t-d for both and it will let you view the document. If that doesn’t work I will try and post the report in it’s entirely on the forum.

Thanks for the link, Treesuit. That's some pretty cool info!

If you don't want to wade through all the "Click here to continue" links, you can go to the bottom of the page and click "Print this pub", which will take you to this screen to download a PDF copy of the report:

And by the way...if anyone else (besides me) was worried that Treesuit was giving away a username and password to a super-secret government site, they give that login info to the public themselves here:

Oh darn, :? I was going to try my luck at the DSCP to place a large order for MRE's at discount price

That is indeed interesting info, but do the results of the study really surprise anyone? It's 2007 and it seems we are still learning "common sense" stuff.

Maybe (hopefully) this study will help to get those FSR out and available on a larger scale (and ultimately, in to our greedy little hands as well!).

Hey guys,
This report kind of was interesting to me since I am firefighter and in the military. I can remember getting to some fires and not having a choice on what I wanted to eat. Though on some occasions I do remember eating three MRE's a day and as the fire camp progressed the caterers came in and the regular food was more present.
Let me tell you that the camp sack lunches were far better than an MRE and it filled you up! Now I believe, from the report, that you can get the FSR's just going through the chow line. I will have to admit that being said you would think that FSR's might be more plentiful and start showing up but I guess since the FSR's came out in 2005-06 they might not be to present.
Also to take into count is the cost. When a large fire gets going money is never an issue. That is why the fire camps are so stocked with amenities. So I imagine FSR's might show up in supply trailers along with the MRE's. Anyone agree or disagree?
