More likely, they may be using it to keep the sand out of the mags. I remember the disdain for the M16s back in the days of 'Nam when their reliability was questionable due to the environmental conditions. Seems the most popular thing to do back in those days was to try and get your hands on a M1A1 and ditch the Colt.

Actually, I started out with a 1903 Springfield in bootcamp, graduated to a M1 Garand, then on to the M14, and finally the M16A1.
Give me a M14 or a M60 anyday
