In his auction, this seller says he also has some East German rations. I wrote him asking about dates and price on them. I'll let you all know what he says once I get a reply.

I´m a guy from Germany
You are right, this are rations of the former east german army =
National Volksarmee.
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationale_Volksarmee
The
NVA was the counterpart of the west german
Bundeswehr and went down at 1990 due to the reunification of east/west germany at October 3rd 1990.
So I have no Idea how the cans could be mad 1991...
The manufacturer, VEB (= Volkseigener Betrieb = publick owend company ) Wikana
see:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikana
was a typical, communistic east german company and reopend in 1992 with new (west) german owner
This boxes are earlier made, the seller made a wrong statement about it (maybe not on purpose...)
At this picture you see:
the 1991 date.
But it doesn´t say
made at 11.11.1991, neither
best before 11.11.1991 is say´s :
zu verbrauchen bis 11.11.1991 means must/should be used (
before) 11.11.1991!!!!!!!!
This rations are expired 16 years ago and belive me, they had a bad taste even when they were still "good"
So this box is a "historical relic" of the cold war and the former east german National Volksarmee.
Never seen at ebay germany, $20 is a real bargain for a "display only box".
I bet, at ebay germany this box would go up to $100 or more...

what the fXXX is this SXXX
i wantet to have a look at it and ebay says:
"Dear User:
Unfortunately, access to this particular category or item has been blocked due to legal restrictions in your home country. Based on our discussions with concerned government agencies and eBay community members, we have taken these steps to reduce the chance of inappropriate items being displayed. Regrettably, in some cases this policy may prevent users from accessing items that do not violate the law. At this time, we are working on less restrictive alternatives. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you, and we hope you may find other items of interest on eBay.
Thank You."
i am going to hate ebay... (
not only because of this problem now...)

I don't know the exact law that was passed, but I do recall reading that you can't buy or sell any Nazi crap on eBay if you're from Germany. Maybe they extended that rule to former East German military stuff, too.

hey, it seems the lot has been bought for $35 by someone called "kman-something..." is it a coincidence?

Looks very coincidental. Maybe we'll get some really good pictures of the contents?

No coincidence involved. Look closely at the buyer's name, kman-nc. Our kman is indeed located in the lovely state of North Carolina (NC). I'm sure once he gets these rations, we'll be seeing a nice write up on them.
ETA: And, yes, I saw the winky face.
