IMP question

Post by Paul Buikema » Sat Feb 13, 2016 1:39 pm

So I encountered this meal last year and did a video discussion about it but I never followed up with the research to learn why exactly that the cookies had been deemed inedible. Anyone here have any intel on that issue? I just had a pack of Oreos from a meal only 1 year past its stale date and they were rancid, off smelling and foul tasting, I only took one bite and spat it out.

Interesting! Reminds me of the warning regarding the old British ration pack processed cheese, or AKA "cheese possessed"!

No idea about these cookies, but I remember the same thing with their honey.

I have only seen the warning on the cookies once, surprised to hear honey would be bad, its such a shelf stable product, thanks for your input Housil!

There was a honey bee dying started in 2003. The bee´s had mites affliction.
So in IMPs the honey was labled with sticker saying not to eat it.

I was told by military staff where I work/acquired them that the cookies were voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer for possible salmonella. Cheaper to print labels than repackage the IMPs. Who knows how true that is.

I opened one of the packages and it was pretty clear something was way off. Little spots of mold or some other discolouration. Even I didn't taste those ones!

I guess the Canadian Military sent out a message to commands awhile back;

"Please note that the combat ration program has received notification of spoiled cookies in the following IMP:
NSN 8970-21-887-9549 - IMP 13 Lunch menu #10 Thai Chicken. The spoiled items are the chocolate chip cookies (silver packaging). The chocolate chip cookies must be thrown away. All the other food components in this pack are safe to eat. Labels will be sent to affix to IMP 13 lunch menu #10 in January 2014."

They do not mention why they are spoiled....

I have an 08 IMP in my collection that has a different warning sticker - same size/placement. Mine says that one of the items appears to contain pieces of broken glass, but it is safe to eat and is just crystallized sugar
