Australian Defence Force Emergency Flying Ration

Came across this ADF emergency flying ration the other day on ebay. Thought I'd share as its a bit different.

It comes in a nifty aluminium case that's sealed with duct tape. This one was packed in 2011, so pretty much fresh as it gets :D

After opening it up,

Top pamphlets is a list of contents and instructions for water purification. The two wires you see on the left are for converting the case into a canteen for boiling water. The energy drink powder had already become solid, so it appears the duct tape wasn't that great at keeping out the moisture. In there is two bars of chocolate, pack of M&M's, small muesli bar, packet of biscuits (scotch fingers), tea, coffee, sugar, milk powder, beverage powder, matches, toilet paper, scouring pad and the usual plastic bags.

This a bottle of water purification tabs with a wax seal on the top. Smart move. There's 50 tabs in there..

Here's everything unpacked. The yellow stick on the right is a spring loaded utility knife, which I thought was a nice touch. Only one blade in it though and it feels a bit flimsy. Light duty only I think. You won't be sawing through logs with this 8)

Cool find! The food is pretty much the same thing that comes in the PR1M and some CR1M rations, I like the chocolate even though it is quite crumbly...

Very interesting and I agree the knife is a nice addition.
The metal tins that can be used as a cooking and eating pot is great idea.
You have one for water boiling/drinking and a second one to cook with
But surprised I do not see the spoon, brick type lifeboat type ration or Bullion cubes.

I would like to see these type of rations compared nation by nation.
Both Flying and life boat rations.

Interesting. I'm surprised there isn't a length of tubing so you can use the container to desalinate sea water should you be flying over coastal regions.

If you still have this ration, could you please post the dimensions of the box and if possible scans of the pamphlets so we can read them? I googled the NSN 7330-66-158-0906 and found a request for proposals in 2010 for 4000 of the boxes. If its only issued to pilots this ration is probably pretty rare.

Thanks!

hi guys, found these recently and thought i'd add more info and pics. looks like they are issued in a pair, in a DPCU (specially made for) pouch. the pouch has a dark brown felt lining. these are twenty years old. but mint condition. :) ive opened one container and all contents are show (no knife with this lot) and a bugger to repack
