I like the way the NY Times did the photography of the outer packaging, and raw contents.

One thing I've wondered, is that I've seen a couple of references to the "Charms" candies included, being bad luck. I've always associated "Charms" with being hard candies, which I've never seen in an MRE, are they talking about the chicle chew gum squares? That's the item I know as being a "do not eat", though not because of luck but because they have a laxative effect--which has some basis as they're made with sorbitol.

The charms in MRE's were indeed very hard and no you do not eat them! Bad things happen if you do...

Are they a current menu item? Never even seen any of those, perhaps it's a testament to my good luck? Granted, I don't consume MREs in large quantities and the ones I do get are all recent issue.

No, they are not in MRE's anymore and I think it was around 2006/ 2007 that they were removed from the accessory packs.
