On the website http://www.reprorations.com the erbswurst is advertised and it looks pretty good! I'm just curious if any other rations (other than desserts) came in that form, or was that unique to the wehrmacht? Also is the erbswurst still a part of bundeswehr rations? I've not seen it listed as such. Thanks!

The Erbswurst was "invented" in 1867 and issued as "iron ration" to the German soldiers 1870 in the German/French war.
The outer package had that "sausage" shape from the beginning, but is the only one I know.
As Erbswurst is a regular product, it was and is still available "everywhere", but not in the Bundeswehr.

Thanks housil! I've been thinking of getting some to try out, but I'm not sure how it would be for my type 2 diabetes. Actually it would probably not be any worse than any other rations from any other country, since people with my condition are no longer fit to serve. What I mean is that rations are not designed for soldiers with type 2 diabetes and I'm sure that when erbswurst was issued it was the same situation.

It's just pea flour and either smoked ham bits or bacon bits, and probably lots of salt...
I also have type 2, i'd eat this!

Don´t worry!

Todays Erbswurst is an ordinary food. So it´s equal to any other instand soup/food you can buy in your local grocery.

See the nutrition of Erbswurst:
Image
It´s from the manufacturers "Knorr" page

kcal per serving: 79
sugar per serving: 0
fat per serving: 3g

So Erbswurst is at least "low fat" :D

Thanks for replies, guys! I suppose it would certainly not be as bad for me as, say, the chocolate bars in the EPAs or the chocolate pudding in chocolate sauce from the British rations. As I mentioned, the world's militaries did not develop rations for soldiers with type 2 diabetes or diabetes since both of those issues would dis-qualify a person from serving, as far as I know.

I´m also "handicapped" after I lost half of my intestines so I´m very familar with the problem of what to eat and what better not

Very sorry to hear that housil. I guess I have nothing to complain about with my type 2 diabetes since its pretty much up to me how high my sugar goes. I could not even begin to imagine how it must be for you my friend. I'd be interested to know how it happened to you if you'd feel comfortable discussing it off topic. Totally up to you.

I'm also Type 2 and tried Byetta but it didn't worked for me.... :( so I use the ol' fashion 70/30 insulin.
It controled my appetite but not the sugar. :?
As a diabetic I tell you that doesn't stop me to taste the rations from around the world or thr MRE's. I eat them every now and then. I eat of everything but...in moderation   .
The ones I have are for strict emergency use only. but every now and then I oen a bag and eat its contents little by little....
