I think the NK situation is far far worse than we are imagining. I very much doubt there are even civilian canning plants.
This was the OFFICIAL ration allocation situation before the great famine and food related disasters that began in 1995;
CEREALS (Rice, corn, barley)
Heavy workers 900 gm per day
Average consumer 700 gm
High school students 600 gm
Children and young 3-400 gm
Retirees 300 gm
The rations are collected in bulk every 15th day, from allocated distribution centres.
MEAT AND FISH
1 kilo per family allocated 2 to 3 times a year usually on the eve of public holidays.
MILK
Infants and children only, in "small amounts" not specified.
SUGAR
Was dropped from the official ration in the 1970s. Since then can anly be bought with foreign currency.
in other words only the elite gets sugar.
CABBAGE, PICKLED VEGETABLES (INC RADISH) SOY SAUCE, OTHER SUNDRY ITEMS
Probably issued on a 15 day cycles, as with cereals.
ALCOHOL
3 bottles of a NK spirit and 9 bottles of beer per year
This it must be remember, is the official "ideal" ration scales, formulated in the 50-60s. Now, it would probably be accurate to reduce these scales by 40-50%.
it makes the Cuban ration allocation look like very high class eating.
