I have something similar to that I made last summer. Though mine more or less looks like a cheap home made BBQ. Works quite well and is very portable.

Looks like a modern version of the "Benghazi Cooker," used by the British army in North Africa during WW2. This was a simple stove made from a biscuit tin or British petrol (gasoline, to us Americans) tin. The tin would be cut in half; sand and gasoline were mixed and lighted in the bottom half, and water boiled up in the top half, which was set slantwise on top of the "firebox."
On exercises, I've made one of these from the old "Spam Can" survival cans or larger C-ration cans. After the initial flare up, it cooks quite nicely and quickly. It also puts out a lot of heat in winter.
The LRDG also had a "desert stove" made from fuel barrels, using wood or gasoline-soaked sand as a fuel.

Hmmm..I've heard and read stoires about those C-ration stoves but haven't tried one myself. I've always wondered if they heat up fast.

My grandfather use to tell me stories about those cookers made with gas cans and C-rations.
When he was in North Africa they used to use the top of their vehicles and tanks to fry eggs in the desert heat....lol
