I believe the cellophane-wrapped sausage-like thing is biltong, a South African staple somewhat resembling beef jerky. It's moister and has a different flavor, and South Africans of all races eat it like snack food.

I have a friend who lives in South African and I'm trying to acquire one of their rations.
