Civilian DRYTECH ration review

Post by Treesuit » Thu May 28, 2009 12:45 am

All,

Well I had a perfect excuse for trying one of the civilian DRYTECH ration meals for dinner. I got this unusual item from our Norweign friend NORGE and let me say this meal is veeeerrryyy good! For those of you who have had the Norweign military meals this is something along that line but has more flavour to it.

The meal I had was the "Game Casserole" or Vildtgryde. The packaging was a bright orange color and about as tough as the packages that the military meals come in. Also I figure if your lost then this can be used as a signal panel for rescuers to signal your position, The top has a zipper on it to seal it up when adding the water. Always a good idea.

The meal is freeze dried and when opening it looked very appetizing even in dried form. The English direcions said to add water to the fill line and stir completely. Well, I had some practice with the military meals and that fill line thing is pretty tough to master, even if your just eye-balling it. So I put hot water in half way and stirred it up real good. I should note that I used a fork to turn all the dry blobs and clumps which sometimes the water doesn't hit. Then kept turning away until I had a somewhat smooth paste. I added more until it got to the top. I sealed it up and let it sit for an hour and 15 mintues to fully reconstitute. Just a habit for me and to be sure.

When done I had a pretty thick texture. Next I switched to the spoon: good move on my part. The texture is very thick, and the taste is that of game and onion or onion powder. The ingredients say just onion but I think it's the powder form. The game (vension) is pretty good though some were a little more tough than others. For those of you who are unfamilar, the ingredients said "reindeer" but to us in the USA we have reindeer in the Pacific Northwest but we call them Caribou.

I couldn't detect any other of the ingredients but I suspect they were in there. When done I was truly filled up and once in awhile burping onion or venison. All in all it was very delicious meal that was very hearty. Though I probably would recommend having this out on the trail because it's a little too filling and I suspect the calories are up there aways. But for those of you who want a different sort of civilian line meal then definitely get this! This DRYTECH meal line is up there with Moutain House. :P

Nice Review, it looks like a nice meal. I always find freeze dried meals more filling than regular... don't know why.

I've only ever tried the British Pack&Go freeze deied meal. I'll keep an eye out for these to compare.

Gaz,

Funny I don't think we've heard of the British Pack & Go Freeze dried meals before on the forum before. What are those like?

They are pretty nice, I've not tried many freeze dried meals before but I quite like them. I've only tried the Chicken and Noodles an the peach and Pinaplle desert, that is amazing, it tastes similar to the Tropical German EPA drinks.

Pack 'n' Go make the British patrol ration meals (Those pack don't come up on ebay often) I've not seen the Civilian meals in Camping shop much. Mostly Travellunch. Armyrations.co.uk rations stock them.

Heres is a pack from them, its 3 meals, flap jack bar, hot chocolate and Orange baverage base. Average Calories 2600.

I bought the pack from ebay the flapjack bar was damaged in the post, the rest was fine.

The pack

Its a veggie pack Menu 3, exp date 2012 so plenty of live in them. If you would like I can post the other menus available.

the pack and go meals have been used a lot
in the uk arctic rations, they are good and make your
stomac full.

some of the main meals should have had more spice.

Thanks for the review, Treesuit. The Norwegian rations from what I've had are really good, so it would go without saying these would be worthwhile additions to eat, and collect.
I love the tagline " Welcome to our restaurant"

I went to the drytech site and they have a distributor in the UK
From the Drytech site:

I went to the UK site http: http://www.extremeoutdoorfood.co.uk but it has been under construction for some time now. I hope they aren't greedy, and ship to the US

Guys,

I'm not sure myself if DRYTECH ships to the US but I could have sworn somebody mentioned here on the forum not too long ago. If so, that would great.

Garron-any chance of a food review on those rations and a source to score some?

Here it is. :) Nothing on the mfg. website if they will ship to the US. They do list the menu prices.

Is there another online store that we can go to for Norweign or other rations without paying a arm and a leg?
Treesuit,

this is the manufacturers page: http://www.drytech.no/old/?page_id=40

They have dealers in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Danmark and UK.

The UK-dealer is asking GBP 5.50 - 8.00 for a single entree  http://www.extremeoutdoorfood.co.uk/Products.html
