This article has sickening news. This is PERFECTLY GOOD FOOD and if it can't be fed to the US refugees then let them sell it! I am fuming and wish to apologize to the British for this. Check the Daily Mirror's website per 9/19 on this.

HUNDREDS of tons of British food aid shipped to America for starving Hurricane Katrina survivors is to be burned.

US red tape is stopping it from reaching hungry evacuees.

Instead tons of the badly needed Nato ration packs, the same as those eaten by British troops in Iraq, has been condemned as unfit for human consumption.
And unless the bureaucratic mess is cleared up soon it could be sent for incineration.
The food, which cost British taxpayers millions, is sitting idle in a huge warehouse after the Food and Drug Agency recalled it when it had already left to be distributed.
The Ministry of Defence in London said last night that 400,000 operational ration packs had been shipped to the US.
But officials blamed the US Department of Agriculture, which impounded the shipment under regulations relating to the import and export of meat.>>

This is bottom of the barrel. There already has been Israeli pear juice thrown out that was to go to refugees of Katrina and some Italian rations are headed to the incinerator.

I say we let our Congresspeople know about this!

We should repay the UNBELIEVABLE kindness of the Israeli government and send them back some prune juice...lol.

Just saw this post. I know its an old post, probably worth remembering how disaster areas need a quick and easy ready to eat meal for survival, just as valid then as now.

It reminded me of when I drove down to New Orleans 6 months after Katrina, I couldn't believe how disconnected government agencies are with what's going on in the south, the British ORPs can last up to 3 days if you stretch it out.
It was a gift of the British government free of charge and I couldn't believe how much if a waste it was.

When they did the Mardi Gras parade shortly after FEMA was represented as blind mices.
I don't think Anything has changed in 2019.

I hope to return to New Orleans one day to see if they have recovered and bounced back.

such a shame those rations went to waste, especially considering they were a gift from the UK government to a ravaged region in need of them..makes me angry as an American that our government was too proud to hand them out to the people that needed them

The British rations were withdrawn because of the risk of infection from the beef products, not because we were ungrateful.

Mad Cow Disease was a big deal at the time in the UK. They got it under control, but I understand they've recently found more infected cattle.

The residents of New Orleans probably wouldn't have been any happier with the ORPs than they were with the MREs they got.

Just excuses it sounds like to me. Every one of these rations is NATO approved and are deemed fit and certified to feed any NATO troops, including USA troops.

So they are fit to feed any NATO soldier, but...they can't be used for emergency relief?

It's just more big government getting in the way, and an added black eye to their criticized response to Katrina.

I didn't mean to say it was a very good reason, just that there was a reason besides callous disregard of the UK's generosity.

Been to England several times over the years, and I eat those fine roast beef dinners they have without batting an eye.
