hi ericson

EPA made in 2000 are still ok. i got EPA out of 2002 and i never had any bad experiences with them. not 1 item was thrown away... :D

you cant give a time window for your question. some say 5 years, some 10 years and some say a lifetime. i would tell you something between 10 years and a lifetime

there is a simple plan you have to follow. here is the best descrption ever made by kman:

kman wrote:
1. Check the packages for tears, punctures, or swelling. If you see any of this, throw the item away.

2. Open up the item (entree, side, spread, whatever) and smell it. Does it smell bad? Not dog-food bad, but spoiled-bad :-)? If so, throw it away.

3. Look at the food (can be scary even with a good MRE but you can do it). If the coloring looks off or strange, throw the item away.

4. Take a small taste. If you taste anything strange (something "not right", sharp, bitter, sour, etc.), spit out the food and thow the item away.

5. If all that looks good, chow down!

The older entrees (square shape):

had a requested shelf life of 20 years. The manufacturer gave a guarantee for 15 years. The Bundeswehr replaced them after 10 years. "Older" soldiers can remember to "EPa-day" once a week at mess hall when the old entrees had to be eaten. This EPas where designed for a long time storage during the "cold war"

The newer entrees (rectangular shape), have an official "storage time" of two years, a shelf life of 3.5 years.
See:
http://www.bundeswehr.de/portal/a/bwde/ ... ontent.jsp :

But as German_EPa said, the shelf life is almost unlimited. I have eaten 30 years old entrees without any problems. The square shape (newer) entrees aren“t this old yet, but I have eaten almost 10 years old without any problems.
