I visited a friend in hospital today. He asked for something special so we opened a 30 years old EPa "Hartkeks" (hard tack or crackers) and a canned meat w/ lard "Schmalzfleisch"
The 1989 Hartkeks, had still it´s vacuum
Too bad they were slightly, inedible rancid
The Schmalzfleisch containr, also 1989
looks still OK to me
and tasted still OK.
The meat was still OK after 30 years

It's the fats in products that go rancid. That these crackers and lard packed meat did not go rancid is amazing - they must have been stored in ideal conditions. Looks yummy!

The crackers were rancid and inedible. Ja, they were stored in perfect condition at 15°C for years.

Those old school crackers are always a cointoss, if you get really lucky and the vacuum seal is 110% intact they are still fine to eat.
Once you can shift the packaging abit, showing the seal is at least partially broken, they are rancid.

My mistake, I see you said they were rancid in the OP. I have yet to try Hartkeks that weren't rancid
