Well, I think it's time to revive this old topic, because I have some additional information.

Firstly, the reason why info on Austrian MREs are so hard to get:
The Austrian army prefers to feed their soldiers "normal" food wherever possible, with MREs being the last option among many of how Austrian soldiers might be fed.

Secondly, I have, after a lot of searching, found an authentic picture of an actual Austrian MRE as issued by the Austrian army.

http://www.imgrum.org/media/68047845791 ... _191726557

The photo was posted by an Austrian soldier on Instagram, tagged "combat ration", which is what the Austrian army calls MREs.
It does look very similar to Travellunch, which is supported by various written descriptions I have found, describing them as "freeze-dried or dehydrated food packets as known from the civilian outdoor sector", among other things.

Another interesting fact is that the Austrian army procures their "combat rations" through the Bundesbeschaffung Gmbh, a procurement company run for and by the Austrian government. ( http://www.bbg.gv.at/ )
The relevant entry shows that the "combat rations" are purchased alongside canned bread, but no further information as to who supplies them is publically available.

Thx for the update on this.
You are right, the pouch seems to be a "Reiter Travellunch". They are still in use also with the German Bundeswehr rations since 2012.

At least according to that one ebay sale back then - though some more confirmation of them actually using Travellunch does make it look a lot less questionable.

Hi I am from Austria and until recently it was impossible even for me to obtain an genuine Austrian Army MRE. But luckily my Cousin married an Officer. Talked to him 2 days ago and he'll provide me with some. But what I got on Information was also interesting: He said it varies heavily. Sometimes they just get a few breads with butter and some coldcuts, sometimes they get the travellunch stuff and sometimes the good stuff is broken out. But the Travellunch one at the very beginning of this thread is actually used by the Austrian Army in that form. So I am really looking Forward to what I am getting. It'll take a bit but I'll Keep you updated.
Hi from Austria to Everybody!
