Questions about MRE's

Post by Johnny A. » Wed Sep 19, 2007 9:38 am

Hi. My first post.

And to the point:

What kind of an EPA is this and how long do they stay eatable?

My second question would be that how do the U.S. troops in Germany store their MRE's? Are they in an airconditioned warehouse or are they exposed to the hot german summers without protection?

I have a source for some MRE's which are most likely from german bases, but the seller say's they are for collection purposes mainly. They don't know if they are still good. I would like to eat them during my hunting trips, and of course just for enjoyment.

The seller got them in sealed boxes and the Fresh-Check tags indicate they are still ok. They are dated/manufactured in 2003.

The seller is a regular store which sells military surplus and camping gear. I quess i have to buy one or two of them and see what's inside, manna or mold. I probably have to post some pics here when i get them cause i am not good at evaluating food quality and i haven't eaten military chow in years, after i left the service.

This isn´t an EPa!

These are:

This green Emergency Ration are just an (real) Emergency Ration. The Rations for the live boats are in same size, but colored orange and taste much more sweet than the green one.
They contain just some (energy) bars, water purifying tablets and an instand tea. Mine are made in 1987, still edible and made "for ever".

We don´t have real hot summer in Germany (This morning +5°C only) ! Maybe just some hot days, but not complet summers.
I have (had) 7 US insallations around my place, from a hospital, to a a couple of barracks and two Air Fields. As a paramedic we were almost daily inside the installations and I NEVER saw any MRE outside!
They keep the rations inside allways, not for airconditioning but rain protection. Remember we are talking about Germany!

As long as the TTI is OK, don´t worry, enjoy your meal...

I ment are they stored in a hot warehouse. Two weeks in 35C is probably about the same as 6 monts in 20C. But I quess the freshness tags are reliable then.

Two weeks ago i visited an old storage, where c-rats are stored in the 80ths and later MRE.

This storage is now used by a wine company for storing wine, it was very cold in this warehouse, outside we had over 25 degrees.

bye
