Australian rat Packs

Post by sgt mike rtd » Fri Oct 07, 2005 5:28 am

:) gday guys
just thought i would fill you in on australian ration packs.
now these things are as rare as hen,s teeth in australia, and when you get them on ebay they dont last long. the ones i have i got a good deal on . first up is Combat Ration (one man) packed 1996/97.
menu A.
beef minced with spaghetti 1x135g
jam peach 1x26g
beef and vegetables 1x225g
rice freezed dried 1x55g
peaches 1x140g
biscuits anzac 1x85g
beverage base powder orange+lime 1x12 . 1x12g
soup powder, french onion 1x10g
chilli sauce 1x10g
soya sauce 1x10g
musesli bar, three fruits,apricot@coconut 1x32g,1x32g.

common to all menus:
biscuits survival 1x42g ( very simular to dog biscuits dont try eating with false teeth)
cheese 1x56g
chocolate 1x50g
sweetened condensed milk tube 1x85g
chewing gum 1x4pellets
candy chocolate mm,s 1x60g
candy hard 2x30g
vegetable extract (vegimite) 1x15g tube
pepper 1xg
choclate drink powder 1x20g
sugar 12x7g
tea bags 2x
instant coffee 2x3.5g
salt 1x7g
matches,waterproof 1xbox
curry powder 1x3.5g
can opener 1x
band rubber 2x
toilet paper 1x10 sheets
pad scouring with soap 1x
bag plastic,inner sundry 1x

now i have had this typ of rat pack before and 1 is supposed to last 1 day, well it lasts a little longer. most in the pack is eatable and the brew kit is a good one. the canned cheese is a little dry but if you mix it with the vegimite on a survival biscuit , its not to bad. the beef with spaghetti is ok if you add the chilli sauce. peache,s well yummm. 2 types of musli bars 1 dry 1 wet, the chocolate is horrible, but no diffrent to british chocolate, unless you melt it and use it as a drink. mm,s well they are just mm,s. beef and veg is ok mixed with the rice and a little soy sauce. or with the french onion soup base. all in all a fairly good ration pack. the one thing i think is great is the tube of condensed milk , now that is a boost if your on a tab,and you still have enough for your brew kit. well thats about it guys out of a 10 --8. i would post pic,s guys but still dont know how to put them on .
cheers

Awesome info, I had not heard , though I had wondered.. I thought perhaps they ate strips of dehydrated kangaroo meat in the field or something ;)

It certainly sounds like solid fare!

:( Just typical entree's with one H-ll of a lot of fat, veins and gristle. I know. I had some before. Dutch style beef stew with super chunks of fat, spaghetti with vein strips mixed with the spaghetti. Etc. All the other stuff in the Aussie 24HR. packs was great, including the little toothpaste type tube of Vegemite. But, those entree's are for the extremely hungry soldier in the field. Croc. Dundee would agree, I think! 8)

Guys,
I agree with Sgt Mike RTD. The Aussie packs are rather good for a few things. I had one about two years ago and the comments but Sgt. Mike very right on the money, but I wish they had more of the condensed milk in the tube and the Vegemite :D . I simply go nuts over those two. Seems rather bizarre that a "yank" would be loving Vegamite, I think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread! :D And what do you know it's great on sliced bread as well! Though I wish the chocolate drink mix wasn't so sweet and the cheese in a tin wasn't so gummy. I think I tried heating it up and it turned to glue or something, I don't know.
One other point is the multi-purpose tool/can opener or a "freddie". I have two and think that these are another of the rather ingenious tools created by the Aussies/Kiwi's. Wouldn't you think?

New guy here. I have a question about the Aussie rat pack. Is the main entree dehydrated like the old U.S. LRRP ration? I have an Italian Veal main rat; and, am not sure what to do with it. The rice pack has instructions printed on the pack. Any help would be appreciated.

Sgt. Mike, if you get any rat packs you are willing to trade, I would be
very interested.
